The Tool Thread

Mr Greenfield
Yeah, 12 point spline. That’s a fun one.

Used my external torx bits just once.

Let’s not forget socket driven hex bits too. Metric and imperial. 1/4, 3/8, 1/2. Regular and impact.

And the 12mm Subaru differential drain plug tool. Bone head move of Subaru’s, should have just made it slightly bigger and 1/2” tools could have natively driven them.

Favourite sockets are the metrinch ones. Sexy AF.

It all sure adds up quickly.

Probably the most obscure sockets I have are 1/4"-drive 12-point imperial with intergrated uni-joints. 1/4, 5/16, 3/8 and 7/16 from memory. Think I used one of them once.

Their ratchets were (and possibly still are) shit tough. Low POE and sloppy ratchet mechanism.
I assume you actually mean shit though?

*Do you just need sockets as you have other tools or do you have no tools?
*What do you intend to work on?
I already have Allen keys, a bike tool roll and some torx sockets (can't recall the size off the top of my head). This is for general usage; things like a 3D printer nozzle, various bolts on the racing sim, maybe my skateboard (or maybe I'll get a T tool). There's not really much use for sockets on the bike (apart from forks maybe). I might also need to pick up a set of ring spanners but that can probably wait.

Could I interest you in something like this?? They do lots of different kits

I’m looking to get a 1.5mm hex screwdriver for gear adjustments and working on juniors new RC car.

Most seem to be ball ends (looking at Wera), which I’ve usually tried to avoid. Would they be alright for the intended use, or better searching for flat ends?

Kinchrome make a mini set that is ok and cheap but for that specific use look at getting some of the screwdriver style. Or T handles but you don't want to be applying huge torque to the fasteners.

I have a few of these Bondhus ones, they are very good quality and for the torque you can apply with a screwdriver handle there is no problem with them fuxxoring the heads of allen bolts.

@ashes_mtb what rc car did junior get?

Grabbed him one of these. https://hobbiesdirect.com.au/HSP-11...tric-Brushless-Off-Road-RTR-RC-Buggy-94602PRO

Claimed top speed and run time seem pretty accurate surprisingly. Handy that all the parts are replaceable as he’s already broken the rear suspension mount. Hobbytech sell the identical car under a different label so can source the parts locally.

I have an HPI Vorza from years gone by. Multiple upgrades. It is lunacy. So fast. So much fun. #1 has a truck thing. Now twin battery with more motor, nearly as fast as the Vorza and totally uncontrollable. Even an area of 100mx100m of grass is too small when these things do 100+ kph.

100kmh is mental. ~50kmh is more than enough for our street and front lawn where this thing gets used. Pretty cool hobby when you get into it, and more affordable than it used to be with cheap brushless electric options.

Mine does about 130kph. You don't just crash into things anymore, you destroy things.

Hobbytechtoys.com.au are great for local support, Mr10 got one of the smaller 1/16 4wd ones at Christmas last year and its still pretty quick.

Buy your batteries from Ali much cheaper, or at least the ones for his car are.

My kids have these https://au-m.banggood.com/Wltoys-12...QuadifyRC&utm_content=10589&a=1647908450.8941.

More than fast enough and well designed. But they just eat suspension pin bushings. I have to replace one or two every time they hit something at speed.

I have edited about 10 bodies on mine, tore out the front suspension which meant a new chassis. Spent an hour doing donuts on a concrete driveway, spun the tyres off the rims regardless of superglue, it tore the tyre.

What sort of run time do they get with those?

Been pretty impressed with the HSP. It’s been run full tilt into kerbs and walls for weeks and has only just broken the rear suspension mount. Parts available locally and a $9 fix.

About 15 min a battery but I got 3 batteries with each car.

The included charger was rubbish so I got an ISDT balanced charger.

@ashes_mtb The Amazon Prime price for these is AU $33.08 delivered I think I am going to order a set as I probably paid nearly that for the two I have and will probably loose at some stage. It looks like I can put multiple delivery addresses in at no charge, let me know if you are interested in a set.
Or anyone else for that matter
The only negative to ball ends is when you want to put a screw on the end and then place it into positon somewhre, straight type work best for that.
