Eeeep. It didn't go well. Old Dog does not like New Dog. Old dog has been a bit aggressive towards strange dogs before. And now Mrs George doesn't trust Old Dog. Money on Old Dog is living elsewhere within a few weeks.

This is true, but unfortunately we had a not great experience with our old big dog belting the shit out of our old little dog (she was not right in the head, but that's another story), and now Mrs George doesn't want to take the risk. She wants another puppy around the same age so they grow up together and the territorial antics are sorted before they are old enough to literally kill each other

Have you mixed the genders up? I have generally found that boy dog + girl dog is much easier than same/same.

We'd heard the same. Old Dog is a girl, and according to the family we adopted her from, has a bit of a history of needing to be the only dog in the family.
Day 3 with Bruce today. First and second nights were traumatic, as expected, but we moved him into our room last night (cue separation issues) and we all had a good night's sleep.
We've also renamed him Grampa Bruce. Cos he's a little old man and if he doesn't want to go he won't! Run over there? Nah. Chase a cat? Nup. Sleep in the sun? Yes please!
Looking forward to years of "Come on Grampa, time for a walk!". "Grampa, get off that girl's lap!". "Stop licking your nuts, Grampa!"
