The last movie you've last watched last

Still hoping they extend the screenings at the Sydney IMAX ; every session only has the front 3 rows available which should be avoided at all costs as they are simply too close and too low compared to the screen. How they sell seats there an not get complaints baffles me as they are pretty much unwatchable.

The Odyssey. Wow, another absolute gem from Christopher Nolan. It doesn't tell a complicated story and the dialogue isn't jargon with names you can't remember. It's almost three hours of great storytelling and great acting. I've never been super fussed on Anne Hathaway, it always feel like she isn't interested in her movies and this feels a bit the same but thats her style I guess. It's most certainly a "see at the cinema" movie if you get the chance.

I think that it really helped to know a bit of the original story, though as there was a bit that was glossed over:
  • Penelope saying that she'd choose a suitor when she finished her tapestry..., but that she was secretly unpicking it at night. That was revealed as a bit of a by-the-by rather than a central element of her story.
  • Calypso being in love with Odysseus and keeping him drugged for 7 years.
  • Odysseus banging Circe as part of a deal to free his men and then Odysseus deciding to stay for a year and continue to bang her until his men convinced him to leave (would have ruined the love story between him and Penelope, I guess)
  • There was also a few interventions by the gods that were omitted, such as Hermes warning Odysseus of Circe and giving him protection against her spells, Atheni helping Telemachus, etc.
I enjoyed the movie though, glad I saw it.

I also thoroughly enjoyed all the right-wing cry babies getting all worked up about Helen being black and that Sinon was played by a trans person. Because you know, it's such a disaster when a movie with one-eyed giants, six headed beasts, witches and horny gods isn't realistic! (But, always worthwhile to keep in mind that the people spreading all that butthurtedness over the movie probably couldn't care less in real life, they're just servicing their brand for the attention economy - they gotta have something to maintain the flow of rage dollars!)

One would have to assume they'll keep showing it till demand dries up. I'm trying to get to Melbourne to see it on the big imax screen, who knows when that'll have seats available.....
