The gaming thread

(unasked for update on my conflicted relationship with Doom Eternal): gave it another go recently and third time's the charm, finally the irritating platforming and bemusing weapon options went from confusing to instinctive and it's f***ing great. Makes you work for it but when it clicks it's so rewarding. Even killed my first Marauder last night which wasn't as hard or anywhere near as irritating as the internet said it would be (maybe I just got lucky).
The Marauders are irritating af at first. Their first appearance as a boss stage I spent ages until I finally worked out the timing.

But once you get into the flow zone, the soundtrack and pace of the game is phenomenal.

It's a game I can occasionally pick up and just play my favorite levels for a quick session.

Yeah killed that Marauder on the second go by just following the tutorial (wait for green eyes then apply generous servings of ballista and super shotgun). Got nailed by his angry ghost doggy the first time but didn't see it the second. Am only playing on Hurt Me Plenty difficulty though (Ultra Violence just means too much time staring a loading screens for me).

One hitting charging Pinkies with blood punch will never, ever, ever get old. Also boom-maxxing that grenade accessory with tokens until it's basically a shoulder launched nuke. So so great.

Feeling slightly disappointed in a good way. Got Warhammer Boltgun as a PSN monthly game.

Now playing a 90's looking game with as much of the default old school pixellation 'retro features' turned off on the uber PS5 Pro and 4k TV and it still looks like I'm on a 486DX100 with VGA. It is an entertaining mindless blast fest though and the one man army Malum Caedo's one liners are epic. He knows how to put down a heretic demon thingy.

'I am cleansed in the blood of my enemies'.

The more I see about Grand Theft Auto 6; the less excited I am for it. I've played all of the GTA games but this one just seems like it'll turn into a reality TV show full of stupid Americansims where you'll have so much you can do that you'll essentially live your life vicariously through a game. There isn't much you can't do in GTA 5 so this new one will likely just explode with capability. And I think that is what is dulling my interest in it.
Do you guys plan to get into it?

Not really that keen.

Waiting for the next Cyberpunk 2077!

I am interested but not hyped. To be honest the last GTA I played was 3. I have 5 in one of my libraries probsably epic and have never even bothered to install it. 6 does look pretty schmick though and if the world simulation is as good as RDR2 then it will be fun to mess around in. I fear the controls will be as garbage as they were in RDR2 and they will stick to the awful super on rails mission completion as it was in RDR2 which was a joke for a so called sandbox game.

I'd argue that's been every GTA since the third one, just Rockstar taking the piss out of American culture. If this one is well written I'll give it go (be hard to avoid it really) but if it's full of obnoxious characters like the last one then meh.
I'm still playing Supreme Commander with the excellent Loud Project mod, it revolutionises a 20 year old game with brutal AI and dozens of new units.
F***ing loved Forged Alliance back in the day. Just building brick wall defences as the UEF and turtling like a champion. From memory the average game went for like 4-6 hours though..

Brutal AI much of an improvement?

I've never played it, but found a disc copy at an op shop for $1 recently, and it even redeemed into my Steam library. Might be something to take a look at.

Doooo it. So much scale. So much destruction. So much awesome. There's also a whole economic system built in but it turns out you can make economic management really fun if you add lots of explosions.

The AI revamp is part of the Loud Project.

It's actually really adaptive and smart. An earlier game it rushed my well setup defences with 100s of low tier units, I sent my offensive units forward to bolster the defences but while I was distracted it sent a dozen transports with cloaked heavy units to the back of my base undetected and they wrecked everything and killed my commander..

But doesn't have DisplayPort.
I suspect that's because it's part of Dell's entry-level range (S model prefix), you'd need to move up to the U3425WE (about 3 times the price) if you wanted to daisy-chain. No idea on the current monitor market so I can't really recommend anything.

Took a spin the in the pretend cars last night. Still running Assetto Corsa (Custom Shaders Patch) and a little bit of ACC.

Juyst bought another PS5 (sold one a while ago as it wasn't getting used.)

Any game recommendations?

If you have time to put into an amazing RPG, get Crimson Desert. I'm over 200 hours into it and every time I play it I am amazed at just how good it is. It's my game of the year by a mile.
Other suggestions:
Ghost of Tsushima then Ghost of Yotei
The Last of Us 1 and 2
The Horizon games (as @Oddjob suggested)
The remastered Batman Arkham games are timeless
Baldurs Gate 3 (another game you can sink 300 hours plus into and in my top 5 of best games ever)
Cyberpunk is exceptional
The Witcher 3 is exceptional

I saw the preview for this and completely forgot it's since been released last year. Will be hitting this on the weekend!
