The gaming thread

Looking in the pile 'o shame and started Titanfall 2. I can see why it reviewed so well and looks superb upscaled to 4k on the PS5 Pro.
Everything works just right. It is a solid FPS.

I enjoyed Titanfall 2, it captured the mech feel yet still had the engaging single player element. From memory the campaign was fairly short but fun to play.

I'm almost 100 hours into Ghost of Yotei. It is the sequel (of sorts) to Ghost of Tsushima. If you haven't had the pleasure of the first game and enjoy a fantastically made single player open world game then please put a pressie under your tree this year. It is amazing.
I'm a big fan of the first two Project Cars games. The fourth in their series; Project Motor Racing came along a few weeks ago and the world has condemned it. They're even had to sack staff because of the backlash. Now, I'm right into my simulation driving games. I don't do Forza etc, they're too arcade-esque. The Project games have always had great car physics and honestly, the new one drives amazingly well. It needs a polish on the appearance but the stuff people are saying is so far from the mark. For example; people claim the car feels like shit then they disclose they play with a controller and not a wheel. Well der! People said the long career mode took too long. Fuck me dead, it was out a day and people were saying that shit? It should take you a year of playing to get the full feel. I honestly think most opinions on these games are from people who did not even buy it and too used to picking up shit games like the turd F1 games that want an instant result. They're missing the point. Anyway, the game is fantastic, the driving experience is great and the cars included (plus those on upcoming DLC's) are unreal.

This is a good example of the kind of FPS that are just getting harder to find. Too much emphasis on multiplayer and / or Battle Royale instead of engaging singleplayer games. I hate to be a "good ol' days" kind of person but I think they did reach peak that is likely not to come back.

I am only aiming to play the classics now.

I have had a small go of the Ghost of Tushima demo and did like what I saw. On the list but, but the pile 'o shame..........

Haven't tried Project Cars since the 360 era and it was pretty good then too. I tried to like Assetto Corsa but the steering is just diabolical sloppy on the gamepad so have let that one go. GT7 is the only driving sim that has dragged me back again in recent times.

sim racing is going through an odd time. AC evo has been in pre-release for ages. Out of nowhere AC rally turned up, and whilst still a pre release is getting great reviews. Meanwhile AMS2 put out a massive update on what was already a good game. F1 announced the 2026 version would just be DLC for 2025. LMU is a good option for on line racing with its more limited content but isnt so great at weeding out crash and burn types

meanwhile iracing just keeps doing its thing, being very expensive but its safety rating system gets you better racing etiquette once you escape rookies, whilst charging a lot and even more for every new car and track

now is not the time for PC memory upgrades 😵‍💫

64Gig ram: Jan25 = $340, Dec25 = $1399-1499 (32GB is $700+)
2TB NVME: Jan25 = $180, Dec25 = $300 (not as bad)

thanks AI...

crazy, 32gb ddr5 cost me $168 for current build in Nov 23.

At least the gpu market is safe this time… ohh

GPU’s are about to be in the same boat as ram - think back to when mining exploded and you paid through the nose as all the cards were just bought up - GPU’s are also good for Ai - and need wait for it ram - I was just about to do an upgrade on my system and have now decided it’s good til it dies :)

seems to be part and parcel of life now, cost of absolutely everything goes up but the wages remain the same.

glad i updated my computer before all this bullshit, 32gb ddr5 and the 4070 should see me through this bullshit

Soooooo …… apparently due to Ai data centres the price of ram will remain high and possibly go higher for the next 10years - as there is no way to easily produce more than is currently being produced
I just can't wait for the AI bubble to pop.

The billions in revenue required to justify the AI investment just aren't there. And Sam Altman et al have forgotten that humans are cheeeap.

But, but, they have spent the money and need some ROI. We are busy solving problems that no one asked to be solved.

The only memorable AI thingys of mention are Velvet Sundown and Tilly Norwood.

anyone checked out Tainted Grail Fall of Avalon? Looks pretty good - kinda thinking that or Avowed while its half price to play over xmas.

Otherwise might just play through Divinity Original Sin 2 again now that the new game has been announced

Since cat duties have kept us inside today so far.

I've just finished Titanfall 2. It is a must play and worthy of the 9.5 / 10 rating it gets.

Will give Arc Raiders a crack next that I picked up from the Boxing Day sales.

I've started Thrillville Off the Rails - its a xbox 360 title that we used to have a long time ago. Its a kids game that's easy going, managing a themepark, designing roller coasters.

Sometimes I don't have the metal capacity for the frustration the multiple deaths DS3 provides, so Thrillville provides me with a break from being the ashen one.

New year and I am about to jump into VR. I've played before a lot at my mates house, just need the 101 tips to get started. Currently rocking a 7800XT which should be plenty. looking to get a standard logtiech g29/g920 setup but the VR kit is where I am stumped.

Looking at the Meta 3 or 3s and can't figure out which to get. Also can't figure out if I actually need a gpu since the meta has it's own? So confused. THe 3 has higher res so I hae no idea if this is even going to run on my gpu (I assum it does more rendering that a standard flat screen by at least 2x)

I came here to mention GT7 - I got GT7 and a steering wheel for Christmas!

It came up because my wife's colleague is really into racing sims and so she dug deeper and came up with a gaming bundle.

What a blast! I remember GT from years ago but always on a controller. The wheel is a game changer, I get more feedback and can fine control steering and braking much better.

Now of course you start to look at what the industry can offer and now I'm already craving a Fanatec DD Pro QR2 :D

PS. My favourite car so far is a tuned M3 Evo, what a machine to race the Nurburgring!

This just released - https://www.e-pxn.com/products/racing-wheel/vd4-bundle

Definitely worth looking at if you can stretch beyong a G29 (unless you're playing on PS5).

I have thought about a steer wheel then look at the living room. It isn't going to work out well

Haha, I'm going to get one of these so I can fold it up when not in use -

Update, decided on a setup and unfortunately it has (and probably will continue to) spiral.

Controls: Fanatec CSL DD bundle: 5Nm motor thing, with standard wheel, CSL pedals with load cell brake added from facebook market. The brake is ridiculously stiff and already ordered some softer springs from aliexpress as well as a throttle spring to make that slightly stiffer. The mod scene seems to be good with this stuff.

Rig: Trak racer TR40S. Decided an alu profile would be best to fine tune the seating position which I'm sort of picky about.
Seat: Next level ERS5. Prefer the fabric over fake leather. Even in a real car never liked leather for a sportscar setup, move too much.

Future stuff:
- Need a shifter and looking at some of the simsonn stuff for about $150 odd. The fanatec stuff is more integrated but wants $350! Yikes!
- Considering haptics on throttle and brake and seat. These things have gotten really cheap but I'm trying to find something that integrates the bass shaker and control haptics in one shot. Can be done but not plug and play - will investigate and not sure I have the time for non plug and play stuff.
- VR is on the cards, probably got with meta.
- Motion. Motion has dropped in price considerably. Off the shelf stuff can be had for $10k. GULP! It's all comprised of stuff from alibaba and a few new alternatives have bought the price down a fair bit. Seen a few for US$2k. This one is a bit more in the future, I'm hoping the tech gets a bit cheaper.

Package has arrived and the rig looks like the 7 hour build time was'n't kidding. Looks like I got my work cut out, pics to follow when I'm done building (which could be a while).
