The gaming thread

Had a go at Doom The Dark Ages on a mate's gen 5 console on the weekend (whatever the latest xbox is).

Initial verdict: excellent. faster introduction than Doom 2016, and you trade Doom Eternal's meth monkey for being a big fat tank man instead, which is way better imo. The attack / melee combinations are much easier to understand and utilise than Eternal's too, and the new Imp Stalkers are f***ing awesome. Music still great. Oh and the shield. THE SHIELD. So good. Go play it. Now.
But I thought you said you liked the platforming in Doom Eternal :p

I'm keen to try Dark Ages; will have to see if they have a sale shortly.

In the meantime I played The Last of Us Pt1 and got totally sucked into the storyline.

The reviews about Pt2 were very polarising, but I thought I'd give it a chance anyway.

Glad I did, as I found Pt2 to be a very nice sequel which filled in a lot of holes in the first storyline. The flashbacks and different character perspectives gave both games a Quentin Tarantino feel.

glad not just me, the short time frames do add to the cortisol levels... and happy they are not one-and-done :D

redoing a mission with no farks (to get that one thing you missed) is much fun and so much faster, since nothing to lose!

Ohhh, the lure of finding those collectables roped me in a bit too :D
I did enjoy the crazy fight scenes that goes nuts for a short time then silence. Rip out those gore nests and run !

A great game.

It's fun in a much more fatal way. Not one-hitting monsters with the trusty shotgun unless they're at point blank range has been a bit of a surprise.

Confident death rate is going for stonks once the first Hell Knight shows up...

The Super Shotgun sure sorts them out but the reload  The chainsaw can be handy for those close encounters but the unlimited micro missiles on the Assault Rifle was one of my favourites.

so close.. past the meatfest... last boss fight! mm big guns,..

WOOHOOO

Serious Sam 4 for the PS5 can be had for $7.49 now.

It sure looks great and has that extreme cartoony ultraviolence that we love. Just started it on normal and the it is already ramping up the hardness. The only game that can seems to slow down the PS5 Pro when big crazy scenes are in flight, or might also be sloppy code

Recently finished a play through of Stalker 2. Got the game at launch with all its jank and slowly chipped away at it over 6 months and multiple patches. Really enjoyed it - highly immersive environment and mostly great combat. Will dive in again down the track.

Got through some games last year including a Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous playthrough last year. Massive game, enjoyed the challenge.

Also Aliens Dark Descent. This was the most stressed I've ever been playing a game, but thoroughly engrossed. Great stealth / tactical squad game that gets pacing and tension so right.

having ticked off some big achievements in FH3 and Burnout Paradise I am re-visiting DS3.

Last time got about 75% through it and something else came along, I've started again, already experiencing the pain, already questioning my sanity

I finished Death Stranding on the weekend. Within 90 minutes I had it uninstalled and traded the disc for new games. I was actually surprised that I enjoyed the playstyle but holy miss moly I did not enjoy the amount of cinematic and repetition of the guts if the story. And even in the end it made fuck all sense. So what do we do now? We make a sequel! I can't say I won't ever play it but it won't be for a long time. Kojima loves to tell a random story but that game takes the cake.
I reloaded GTA 5 for a laugh and picked up Armored Core 6 Rubicon. I'll give that a whirl soon enough, was a bargain at $30 for a new PS5 disc based game.

My kids are playing a game called "stray" on the PS4.
The visuals are gritty, dystopian future type stuff. The protagonist is a cat, humans have died out, robots live where humans once did and little vicious creatures called Zurks try to eat anything that moves.
The kids haven't reached the end of the game yet, though I think they are close. I'm enjoying watching them play. It's a single player game but they have been taking turns and helping each other complete missions.

Dozer, how do you find the driving physics in the GTA games?

I recently bought GTA 5, and trying to drive with a controller shat me off so badly I deleted the game from my playstation. I still have the disc, so I might revisit it in a year or two.
It might be just me, but I find the driving slightly better in Cyberpunk 2077. Playing for the first time, and it seems pretty cool, now that all the glitches and game-breaking crap seems to have been fixed with patches. Very happy I waited.

It's nice to see a game that requires exploration and puzzle solving, and doesn't involve mega-death and gore spatter.
I don't mind action FPS games, but all the time would be a bit much.

Little Kitty, Big City might be another good one for your kids. Also Humanity.

Great little game isn't it? Despite it's unusual premise. It's a good one to watch others play and just chill to the atmosphere, cat gymnastics and weird robots.

If you're looking for a GTA-esque game but with decent driving physics give the Mafia series a go. All are great, but the o.g. one got a wholesale remake a few years ago and is incredible. Amazing atmosphere and the driving physics are brilliant for a third person shooter and might even surpass a few driving sims too - can even give manual shifting a go.

The driving physics suck! It's basically accelerate, back off and turn, correct whatever mumbo is going on then hope for the best. Slower is faster I guess.

i know a bunch of bikers cannot relate, but i seem to be accumulating some stuff i don't really use anymore. So anyone in sydney want to grab an old logitech G27 and have a go at sim racing, free to good home. grab a pc and some recent titles for not much on steam . wheel, 3 pedals, 6 speed shifter and paddles. old but works ok.
