Had the 7 course degustation menu with paired wines at Otto in Sydney yesterday. 'Underwhelming' is the word that came to mind, particularly when seated 2 doors down from China Doll, which is rather tops.
I try to avoid all of those fancy dining precincts, more often than not the price reflects the rent than the food.

If you want some really good Italian out that way, try Vincenzo's in Darlinghurst behind the Burdekin hotel.

The Mrs likes to check out one of those fancy pants places every few months, this is the only one that has disappointed thus far; having said that you're bang on re the rent factor. Cheers for the steer re re Vincenzos, will check it out!

In that case I highly recommend Bistecca and its two brother restaurants.

Nomad is good too.

Have been to Bistecca a few times, always solid! Have tried Alfies but not the others. Nomad, hmmm, shall take a peek, thanks again!

that sucks, Otto used to be a pretty good feed, obviously gone downhill since I visited.

TBH my go to on the wharf is Kingsleys not too expensive, ambience is great and quality is generally very good. I agree China Doll is also a great shout.

The Gidley (Bistecca's other sibling) is amazing! The wine list is a thing to behold!

I have always wanted to / liked the idea of this sort of thing - or even places that do "Banquets" where you pay per person and the menu is set - I like the idea of the food will be the food even if it is things I wouldn't normally eat - But the Mrs is never keen

Have had some great meals going with the Chef's choice degustation. So many foods I would never pick from a menu. It all fell apart when my daughter arrived. She is adventurous with food but has strong preferences.

I was invited to a degustation thing in Yokohama with some of the big bosses. 17 courses or something of mixed cuisine. I stopped counting. Took hours. Was aweful. And stupidly expensive. Luckily we found a yakitori street stall on the way back to the hotel.

Taking a few days away bush camping. Looking like a couple of heavy (for me) months ahead. Our usual camp in Minlakistan has gone to shit so trying a place just around the corner. Private camp with owners on site. We will return...

Anyway keeping up the traditional camping meals. Honey soy pork fillet with steamed rice. Forgot the spring onions...
