The bike industry crisis

I am not sure what the exact situation is for NSW but it did come up in conversations with parks that they can prosecute people for building illegal trails.
I know that they can fine you here in Tas for not riding where you aren't allowed but I don't think they have the power to arrest you, so if they can't identify you there's not much they can do.
And clubs still see fuck all of it. In fact, we're considering paying it on behalf of the juniors to try and keep some. And for anyone who commits to 12 months on the committee.

So, in fact, AusCycle is costing the club money.
Yep, as I said before they are a just a front for an insurance company.

I attended an AusCycling "volunteer trail maintenance" online meeting, which I thought was going to be about tips on managing trails, but in reality it was that the overwriting insurance company was wanting to reduce it's risk with serious injuries on land managed by clubs (ie riders having accidents), so they are pushing that clubs aren't liable for the trails that they may manage and putting the burden onto the land manager, and also removing any higher risk operations like power tools from volunteers.
So again, all they are concerned with is insurance, and if I cannot use a chainsaw or brushcutter on the trails, then we are essentially will have to close all club managed trails or pay contractors to do the work, which is unsustainable.

Pretty sure they dont have the power to arrest etc; but fines and prosecution...well there was well known incident a while back.

Well also have an on/off thing with motorcycles in the glenrock lagoon area. Funnily enough on the rise again with throttle eeeeebs and e powered dirt bikes. A long ways back i was standing at the gate with the ranger as a small group of dicks roosted past...to their van...to load the dirt bikes in without concern...in front of the ranger who couldn't be fucked to even take note of the van rego. Often comes down to the individual.

National Parks can and will fine you for riding on walking tracks or illegal MTB tracks. I remember 20 years ? ago in the Royal National Park Sydney where I rode alot at the time( I lived right next to it and I knew the head ranger he was one of my neighbours and he HATED MTB's)

RNP they had periods where they had carckdowns on MTBers mostly on weekends. I got caught twice let off both times with a warning luckily or unluckly I was working with RNP at the time do trail volunteer maintance.

Some of the gung ho rangers said they could confiscate your bike as well. That didn't end well.

Stredda all they have to do is hide near the carpark where most MTBers park and take your rego down or take a photo when you get back to your vehicle and pass it onto the cops who will give you a fine $80 I think at the time in NSW.That is if you won't hand over your details to the ranger they took a photo of you.

A mate of mine got fined for riding on walking trails because they went through his Strava and seen where he had ridden.

Oh his online Strava I'm guessing.
Yeah and I think it was the leader board of a segment. I once got advised from out club president that I had said something negative about Parks on social media and Parks had told him this. It took me ages to find out where I had said this thing and it turned out that it was a reply to a comment to a ride that I had done in Strava. So they would have to have found my ride, open the ride and then open the comments to see what I had written.
I left this in the comments in case they came back.....

They'll probably start reading my Rotorburn posts now. 😂

This topic came up (whenever) maybe a few years ago, on Rotorburn or a FB group that looked after yarra trails, and it was always assumed that some Parks staff were lurking and taking note of certain posts.

Well it wouldn't surprise me but I can think of more constructive things that they should be doing with their time.

There is alot of infighting, back stabiing and circular groups among the staff in NSW and Tassie National parks.I thought politics was bad.

I still jump when I see parks staff on the new Mt kembla trails like they are going to bust me for riding trails. It is a bit of a cultural change having legal trails. I also don’t get why people post up videos about their trail building of new trails for everyone to see here in a very sensitive area and parks are not jumping on that.

They can indeed. They are given the same compliance training as NSW police (even the training in firearms and basic personal defence techniques) and have very similar legislative powers. Most of them will however go out of their way not to exercise them. But if you play stupid games and get caught then expect to win the stupidly expensive prizes that the relevant Act demands..
