Earlier this year one of the women in a group/club I've cycled with for years, Gail Allan, was killed on 14th January at around 8am while crossing over 2 lanes of the Princes Motorway M1 (formerly F6 Southern Expressway) to take the Princes Highway exit on the right-hand side at Waterfall. It's something many cyclists have to negotiate when heading south if they wish to take the quieter Princes Hwy. It's an unfortunate design.

If you live in Sydney and cycle on the road, sign it! One day when you're heading south if this happens you will apprectiate it. Currently we have to run the gauntlet uphill just where it changes from 80 to 110km/h, like this...

Even if you're a motorist and hate cyclists, sign it! One less place you'll have to slow down for a cyclist or yell abuse at, because everyone knows they don't pay rego.

The thing is there is an old tunnel under the motorway and a road that leads to the old highway. It just needs a cleanup and removal of some barricades. It was a service tunnel when the F6 was a tollway (paid off in 1995)

In just over 24 hours we've exceeded 500 signatures and $440 contributed! Well done and thank you very much. By donating you are helping promote the cause. Your money goes to change.org and it purchases more views of the petition page, so more people can sign.

I included this old picture from around 1975 when the F6 Southern Expressway was first opened. The yellow line shows the road from the east side (LHS), where the tunnel is, and the road on the western side (RHS) leading to the "old" Princes Highway. The more people that know about this the better.

Please help spread the word by sharing a link to the petition page. In addition to this you could email The Honorable John Graham MLC, Minister for Roads, NSW and let him know just how much sense it would make to reopen the tunnel. His email address is [email protected]. A solution like this couldn't come any cheaper.

I'm hoping to get 5000 signatures. There must be at least 5000 cyclists or more living in the south of Sydney. I'll be doing my best to involve our brothers and sisters over the bridge too!

Thanks and keep spreading the word, Craig Vernon

Signed. I hope this gets up quickly.
Can you get in and open the tunnel up now for some use before the official use? this has always been the mtb way.
I hate the way most governments like to do cycling infrastructure on the cheap and seem like they actually care, but really are just ticking boxes to look like they are delivering.

This could end up being a cool attraction and a unique part of the ride.

signed. This tunnel looks way more appropriate than some of the repurposed storm water drains used as underpasses in Adelaide cycle paths. You have to duck as you ride through them!

🤣🤣 The tunnel is fine and not the problem. There is an Armco fence by the side of motorway that has cut off access to the service road. I was thinking of just spraying something like "service road opening here" I don't fancy standing there with an angle grinder as 100s of cars go past. Even then, there are some significant barriers on the service road that need moving. These ones...

The good news is that there are now more than a thousand people that know about this solution that's already there.

Ride safe.
