Sealant thoughts

If you have good selection of tape widths and valves, its a 20 minute job to tape, valve and seal set of wheels.

It only takes one flat with a tube swap on the trail to make it worth the setup in the comfort of your garage vs the mess around mid ride.

It's great if your tyres seal first time with a normal pump or you have a compressor.

Otherwise it can be a pain!

I've not used a compressor to seat a tyre in a long time, just a floor pump.

Why are the tyres not sealing ?

A mechanic at an LBS farther out from us claims that he's ridden all over Smithfield trails and that tubeless is a waste of time and offers no advantages over tubes.

I smiled and left.

I reckon Rusty or one of the bike mechs here, still swears by tubes too.

I've never converted from a tube to tubeless on the trail mid ride. How did you achieve the high psi needed to seat the tyre?

Schwalbe tyres are harder to seat than Maxxis in my limited experience.

Totally depends on minute differences between the circumference of rims and tyres.
If its tight to get on or it has had a tube in it ,no worries you can do it by hand but like I did yesterday, I had to take to the petrol station for a big whooosh.
It pushed the tyre onto the bead completely so today no worries.

Bit of an update on the Juicy Jizz.

I am lacing up some AliEx Carbonbeam rims on my wheels so had to remove the tyres.

Still plenty of liquid home-brew in the tyres, but I think I need to up the antifreeze ratio as there was a small booger in the rear tyre (TBF the front didn't have a booger and the one booger I found wasn't that big.). The booger mostly consisted on the rubber dust.

But still plenty of glitter left in the liquid to seal any holes I think. The stringy bits were what I puller off the tyre bead where the sealant had sealed on the rim.

Clumping rubber dust is a problem, I reckon. I've used glitter - big and small - for a while in my tyres and it doesn't really seem to do much when I've had a puncture that Stan's couldn't seal.

I've been making my own sealant for a decade or so. I've tweaked the recipe a bit over the years but this is the current mix:

1L latex (craft supply off eBay)
Big bottle of slime ~800ml (pretty much just for the chunky rubber bits)
1.8L water (straight from the tap is fine in Canberra)
300ml Windex (or similar window cleaner) for the ammonia. The ammonia is what stops the latex from hardening. If your sealant is drying too quickly add more ammonia. The ammonia can react with your alloy rims or nipples so make sure you tape the rims properly.

Mix the Windex into the water first. They add the latex stirring vigorously. Chuck the slime in last. Mix well.

Makes about 4L. Costs less than $80.

I used to add proplyene glycol but any time I did the mix would form a sealant booger. Without the proplyene glycol it will form a nice thin layer coating everything in the tyre when dry. This helps to keep things sealed up even when the sealant has run dry.
I want to start making my own sealant. Sick of getting ripped off and buying subpar products that are just useuless. Is this still the go to recipe?

It's the one I've been using (and continue to use). There are a zillion other variants though, but this has worked for me and is simple to make/find the ingredients.

Do it. 20 bucks and i've made about 2 litres and still have some ingredients. I did the glycol and latex as above. Been 2 months or so now and not even needed a top up of air! That shit be sealing good.
see #114 above for rubber . i ground up an old Kart tyre with a 16 grit ZEC disc.

My current mix is:

150ml batch:

75ml PG antifreeze
35ml demineralised water
40ml latex
1.0 teaspoon of bio glitter
2.0 teaspoon of rubber dust
What's your preferred latex product?
When you say antifreeze we are talking just a basic glycol based radiator additive? This is a diluted measurement (as in not concentrated)
I'm making myself some in the coming weeks, nearly out of Stans
