Just wanted to give a heads up after all the rain this week. We were out late on Sunday and things were rideable, but pretty wet. Since then there has been a lot of rain - maybe 100mm at Nerang. I suspect lower parts of Brett's, Pete's, most of Casuarina, Happy Valley and Roy's may be a little at risk. I also suspect Wimps and Norco may be too soft to advise attacking the jumps.

Also, last week someone took down the monuments on Pete's (see picture in my last post) near the North Street fire road and added the rocks to the other end of the little skinny log ride. It was made to have one end with more challenge. The monuments were made to look like eyes as a heads-up you were coming to a road crossing and we hoped riders would try the challenge of bunny hopping up onto the eastern end of the log without a ramp. Even I learned to do it and I'm an unbalanced old fart.

Anyway - you dumb it down and people get upset, you make it harder and it gets changed. If the perps of this deed would like to help us make trail, we would welcome it, but please don't destroy stuff made for all, just for your own purpose. If I don't like your letter box, I don't come and knock it down now do I?

If you can believe this, yes there is a detailed map and we are not allowed to give it out! This and signposting are 2 of our big issues re park safety.

Drop into the bike shop up the road - "Just Ride" before you hit the trail. It is only a couple of hundred metres from the trailhead and they have the big map on the back counter and lots of hints for a fun ride. Sorry about the lack of direct help.

Also a heads-up that there is an 8 hour adventure race on that will be using the Nerang forest area for mountain biking and trail walking / running this Saturday the 13th. Mountain bikers with map boards don't usually dodge oncoming strava chasers very well ;)

Yes, that's the Kokoda Challenge and they will be using the fire roads ending at the velodrome. The fastest teams finish within 11 hours which is not shabby for 96km, especially when a guy I know who has done the real Kokoda walk 7 times, plus the Black Cat Track (much harder) in PNG said that last year a 200m section through Canungra took his team 20 minutes. The saddest and tiredest faces will be on Centre Fire Road through a lot of Sunday as well as Saturday. It is true they cannot get out of the way, because they are knackered. We actually would like to send them along all the singletrack because they compact everything better than a road roller! Foot power.

I don't think Kokoda is on this weekend.
Ridgeline adventures are hosting the last of their adventure race series called "The Culminator" and it's a rogaine style event so there will be random people riding and walking all over the place in there with maps in their faces looking for check points.
Be careful in there peeps.

Then it is going to be a really busy weekend as the Kokoda Challenge is definitely on July 13 and 14.

Just checked re the club social ride and it will still be happening, weather allowing.

Yep, the KC is on this weekend and if your out and about in Nerang on Sunday, give them plenty of room...maybe some encouragement too because the final 14 km through Nerang is absolute torture. Please give them plenty of room.

Regards

thanks for the heads up, popped into the shop and took a photo of the map on my phone, some nice trailwork going on in there, only scratched the surface and keen to go back up there for sure.

wimps would have to be my fave so far :) rocked my world.

what other trails would you recommend for the gravity inclined?

Wimps, Mad Dogs and Norco Flow are all in the same basic area. Mad Dogs starts just east of Wimps and joins it lower down. Norco has bigger jumps and all of them will be changed and upgraded over time. There's also Barney's off the Centre (Three Hills) Fire Road and down to Exit Trail close to the velodrome - it is short, but fun. Other than that we are a bit short of gravity stuff - Pete's is fun, but not of the same challenge as the others. If you have really big stones there is The Outlook at the top of Highland Park on the other side (south) of Nerang. It self selects for the skilled and sick of mind.

cool, thanks for all the info, i'll give those trails a look next ride up there, and try to come throw a shovel around one day.

i have been to outlooks, but never really hit any of the big stuff, had a bad injury a few years back and kinda stopped riding dh, also i have a young son and another on the way, i'd like to see them grow up...

wimps was a comfy level for me, but not that it's all about jumps, i'll def be keen on any other trails which point even slightly downwards where there's some good flow, burms or just speed to get loose. just read back through the thread and Pete's looks cool too. nice work!

out of interest, what is QPWS view on the more dh oriented trails out there, are they going to stay dh or gradually be "softened" for safety concerns? you say jumps will be changed or upgraded? is it more a case of filling in dangerous gaps so they can be cased without danger of injury and controlling erosion etc. obviously the gradient isn't even close to imba standards. be interested to know as i always thought anything remotely dangerous would be a no go with QPWS. good on them if they have come to the party.

cheers

You will like Pete's. QPWS are nervous about all technical trail features and they do not really accept the place of DH specific trails as such. However, they do understand that some trails are descending and also demand that black diamond trails be one-way only (in this case - downward).

They are negotiating with the builders up at Wimps (which will eventually be named Slipstream - they don't like names like Mongrels, Wimps or 911) regarding building materials for structures like jumps. Those trails will not be sanitised. There is every chance over time the jumps will be bigger rather than smaller and certainly will have better entry lines and trannies. Ride-arounds will allow alternate lines, meaning that jumps should end up as per IMBA recommendations (ie -up to 1.2m faces) on the A lines. There will be some compromise on the depth of gaps in places. While we feel that big jumps select out newbies, like at the Outlook, there is still some negotiation with QPWS over that.

If you would like to be involved with work on the descending trails, email via the contacts page on mtbtrailcare.com and it will be forwarded on to Mick and the team on wimps.

Hope everyone is having fun in Nerang. It's been great riding for quite a while now.

A few updates - the team working on Norco Flow and Slipstream (Wimps) have received stone to help with construction and over on the eastern side we have been given a supply of drainage stone (gravel) to add to boggy sections of trail. Knowing Nerang, that will not be too far off.

MTBtrailcare is looking for help with new trailwork starting in the next couple of weeks. This is on a new section of trail we have not touched for a long time. It has just been sitting there waiting for more love.

We went out and cut some fallen timber today, clearing the line and getting to use a new toy. It was pretty casual. By the way - no there was no top bind on this cut

Please check the mtbtrailcare.com calendar http://www.mtbtrailcare.com/Calendar.asp This is a trail we all want completed - even if you don't know where it is yet! The more help we get, the quicker it will appear in front of your wheel.

Thanks to a few locals, I was fortunate enough to have my Nerang MTB cherry popped last weekend, I mostly ride Castle Hill (Blackstone, Ipswich) with the odd trip to Mt Joyce and OHV.

Had heard plenty of good things about Nerang....WOW it didn't disappoint, I can't remember much in the way of names, but it doesn't matter, as they were all awesome.

I'll definitely be making the trip down more frequently now that I've had a taste.

Thanks and Keep up the amazing work!

Unless we get a storm/dump tonight should be great. I'm a couple of K's away and we had total of 20mm yesterday. I'm thinking it will be slightly damp at worst.

I went for a ride at Nerang yesterday for the first time. I rode the two marked trails and was then for a while on a bunch of unmarked single track. No idea where I was...

there is a detailed map and we are not allowed to give it out
I am assuming that this is because the trails were not finished yet? Seven months later, I understand that some of the new trails are finished. Are you now allowed to distribute the map?

Nope. QPWS says maps can only include legalised trail. At this stage that means Casuarina Loop, Three Hills Singletrack and Pete's Track (plus Pete's Extension that joins onto Casuarina). We say there should be an accurate map of all trails as the area is confusing and convoluted unless you are really familiar with it. There are Strava and other maps online and we do have our own comprehensive map. One is on the back counter at Just Ride in Nerang. however, we are not allowed to post it or displat it at the trailhead.

The way it works is that QPWS believe that a map indicates they are responsible for the resource and they don't want to be responsible for something that is not to the standard they demand. So for now and a long time into the future, we will have people riding trails with little or no idea where they are or how to get out.

With regard to further legalisation, the GC MTB club has taken control of Petee's and Bretts now and some work is being done to Brett's with the aim of bringing it up to standard. MTBtrailcare is awaiting permission to start major works at the bottom of 3 Hills and Casuarina (Ashley has done some emergency repairs there lately).

By the way - I fell victim to the trail saboteur 2 weekends back. Missed the rock booby trap but went off trail and got smashed up on Bailey's. Keep your eyes open.
