Project Car / Motorbike thread. Let's see 'em.

The SM was a masterpiece. I would have one in a heartbeat, but sadly waaaaay out of my budget these days.
Is it because there are only 3 of them still on the road?

When I was on the non-riding part of my NZ holiday, we visited Invercargill.

I found a massive motorcycle museum that hand thousands of classic bikes.

The even had some push bikes!

Then in a very old school hardware store there was all these classic motorcycles in amongst all the tool, letterboxes, lawnmowers and general hardware, along with Bert Munro's Worlds Fastest Indian. It was pretty trippy!

Then we wend to the Transportation Museum and that had hundreds of truck, cars and tractors.

Apparently Texaco offered them $6 million for this and they knocked them back.

oohh, you did all the good stuff !
I can still smell Burt Munro s bike - it is pure nostalgia and that fella had gigantic balls , once seen you just have to shake your head ' mental '

If you are still over on South island - get along to the ' toy museum in /near Wanaka that is a trip - it is huge , random , but huge .

And @Haakon and @The Duckmeister duckmeister could I read between the lines and suppose that you have familiarity with NSU Prinz's ?

Coz my childhood was filled with the weirdness and we should all do therapy together hahahaha

Although @Cardy George - yes also know about thos 'Holdens and Ford's and Valiants too - it was a different time

might start my old Vallo for fun , I cant drive it but 'she'll start right up '

No NSU Spiders in my family sadly, but the family car when I was a kid was an NSU Ro80 that was the family daily from 1974 through to the early 2000s. Dad still has it and 10 other ones and a shit tonne of parts and stuff hoarder style - my retirement project. He also has two NSU Prinzes, the series one 2 cylinder ones but neither are complete or running.

Is that a VIP or a Regal?

VIP , Slant 6 , poo brown with a cream vynaaaal roof
I got it off the old fella who bought it in 1970 ..... I've owned it almost 20 yrs , its the best car ever , rebuilt the engine and the suspension ... but when I think about that was prob 10 years ago haha
It has a lot of memories tied up in it ,- been all over Eastern Australia in, it so even if I can no longer drive , it can stay with us
have only started it once In last 18 months ... so 'fuel doesn't go off ' esp with super low compression

oh wow , I have memories of my father constantly fixing the gearboxes with the little plastic balls - with holes in them ?
it was our family car - replaced an EK Holden ...with holes in floor - eventually collapsed in half one day on way to school , I think I was 5 - car would have been maybe 10 yrs old !

Valiants always warm the cockles of my heart, VIPs are a rarity these days, my dad had a few Vals, I had an AP5 and Mrs Cammas had a VE. Would love to get an AP6 or even a VH/VJ sedan for a project but need to sort out storage space, also if I came into some money I wouldn’t tell anyone but there would be signs 🍆

Way back when a guy I went to school with had an E55 340. Lots done to it and it was lumpy and quick. We coincidentally met at a party in the forestry with about 100 others. All gravel roads and after a few beers everyone was doing their best Colin McRae impersonations. Several cars binned. Old mate took me for a run in the charger. I would have rathered piloting the Queen Mary along those roads. What a handful. 600 turns lock to lock which didn't seem to make any difference to where it pointed. I had my mini. It was much fun on those roads.

Leaning Tower of Power is a very underrated motor, and impossible to kill. Nice car, more pictures required

#2 has bought a Barra swapped EL Fairmont to use as a commuter in the bush. Really nicely looked after car. Comfy like a lounge chair on shit roads. Tricky getting it all to work as the later computer wasn't happy playing with earlier stuff but a few tweaks to the 1s and 0s and it drives nicely albeit with the old 4 speed auto. Plans are for a manual swap along the way. And a turbine. Anyway the guy who did the swap couldn't get it to run and drive and a few hands later it is #2's. Full upgrade af brakes and suspenders in progress and that's where this starts. One of the intermediate owners fitted Tickford wheels which really suit the car but three wheels had 24mm hex wheel nuts. Point to point on the hex is pretty much 26mm. The hole in the wheels is 28.5mm. Good luck getting any form of tool in there. Chucked a generic 22mm impact socket in the lathe and turned it down. Luckily the nuts were not gorilla tight and came undone with just a few uggas. Wheels off and brakes and bearings getting some love. And new 19mm nuts on the way.

I feel like a boosted Barra in a live axle E series body might be a little inadvisable for a road car!

If you need a flange like this one, I can probably help out.

Stupid question:
If you buy a limited-edition 4WD that came from factory with a lift kit and bigger tyres, does that mean you can then legally lift it and go even bigger tyres (within state limits, in my case Victoria)?

For example a PX III Ranger, but in FX4Max trim had a mild lift and 32"(ish) tyres from factory. Meaning slightly more lift and up to 34's might be lagal?

Yes. Probably. You'll find all the compliant wheel and tyre sizes on the vehicle placard which should be common across the range unless that particular trim was separately complied. Generally, you can go 5 to 7% bigger or smaller (from memory). As for the lift...whack the VIN in here https://www.rover.infrastructure.gov.au/RAVPublicSearch/ and you 'should' get the complied ride height or equivalent. Maybe. And hopefully a definition of where it's measured from!
