MQ Uni - Elective recommendations?

Hey all,

On the off chance there are some current or former MQ Uni students on here I figured I'd post my conundrum: in 2010 I finished my first year of a combined Arts (Economics Major) / Law degree (which is notorious for being one of the most restrictive degree choices out there once first year is over). Despite really fab results (82 ave. 4.0 gpa) I'm jumping ships to Arts (Modern History) / Law (because the Mhis electives I did were WAY more interesting than the Econ units)

The problem is, I have more 2nd year elective slots than I can poke a broken spoke at!

I've got a bunch of recommendations that fit my time constraints including the required Law and Mhis plus some sociology for kicks... BUT I'm left with a free slot in Semester One 2011 for a 100 or 200 level subject and dont have a damn clue what to do!

Anybody have any recommendations for something interesting?

-Andrew

P.S. Yes, Early Childhood Education is getting serious consideration (*cough* 97% female enrollment *cough*) but I fear I'd drop out of law and do that instead if I did that:rolleyes::eek:;)

1 - Don't be lulled into a false sense of security by good first year results. As you progress, lecturers expect a significant step up in the quality of your work for the same grades, which means that the same level of time/effort that gets you a D average in first year probably won't cut it in subsequent years.

2 - Look carefully at the prerequisites for any third year courses you might want to do. In many fields interesting, specialised courses aren't really offered until 3rd year. I've seen a lot of students miss out on relevant third year courses due to poor elective choices in previous years and several even end up being there for an extra year due to ballsing up and not doing prereq's for courses they needed to qualify for their degree.

3 - Think carefully about how your academic transcript will look to a prospective employer. If all your electives are bludge subjects you might just be justifying the "Arts degrees, please take one" graffiti above the toilet paper.

4 - Given your degrees - I'd think about some human geography, English lit, political science or communications subjects dependent on the field you're looking at eventually being in.

When at Uni I did a Primary School "Arts in the Curriculum" subject. Fun and easy credit points. The thing is it required making "lesson plans" which really is like giving a presentation in the work place. So while it may look easy it gave me some good skills.

Another one I did was Animal Behavior. Again easy and interesting.

Another I had planned to do
Was "Buddhist Mediation techniques" but it was dropped before I could do it.
Another was Women and Witch Craft.
Another was a film unit which involved watching old Sci Fi movies.
Also sometimes units on writing exist which again gives good skills for essay writing.

I would just read a "paper" copy of the unit guide really well. There can be some good finds in there.
