If any bikes worthy of a refresh that daytona is it.

Most fun sport bike I’ve ridden. I’m very jealous, even if I have to cut off my legs at the knees to fit.

They are a brilliant little bike. I couldn’t part with it. I went from an 04 r6 to this in 07. I was a Yamaha man at the time and set on the new r6 2006. Mate bought one and turned me of r6s. They mucked up for sure and turned a fun little sports bike into something you needed to ride like an early 2 stroke.
The triple is such a great motor. Plenty of torque and the sound is so sweet.
Good track bike also.
My back and wrists aren’t going to like it these days but fun times to come

Worst outcome came true. Tank rusted, fuel pump will be done. Probably end up needing injectors cleaned but winging that for now. That sweet smell of varnish dam.
Wouldn’t have wanted to have sat much longer. Amazing what has rusted and what hasn’t. Even 2 of the valve cover bolts started rusting. Battery strap started to break down.

It is such a pity as bikes like that deserve to be saved but its gotta be a labor of love to do it as financially makes no sense

I once a year go to Beranaby All Bike drag races - and this year decided that I wanted to compete next year - So Started the process of obtaining a "Track Bike" - A friend has a 2008 Triumph 1080 Speed Triple that is neglected most of the time so I had a chat to him -= the pretty basic work it would need (Tank - Fuel Pump - Forks serviced - Shock serviced - tune - Miscellaneous bits ) were going to cost more than many complete running bikes that I could buy ready to go - Its hard to save them when they cost so much and will just fall into disrepair if you don't ride them enough.

People keep buying these bikes that are 15 - 20 years old now and only 5000 - 10000 kms on them and think they got a bargain - It just doesn't work that way - But then again people keep fitting slip on and exhausts when their suspension is absolute shite and think they did something good - so cant expect much

You see some classics for sale that’s for sure. Low k’s isn’t alway a good sign. Longer they sit unfortunately the worse they get.
This one a have a sentimental attachment to. Had it since new and they don’t make them anymore.
I won’t admit to the $$$$$ I’ve spent on this over the years. I have ended up with a bike that was built how I wanted it though.
They have the tank fix under way. I saw it tonight and have no problems using it again. I found another fuel pump I had for my other track tank. Will use that in the short term if the one in it isn’t salvageable. Forks will be dropped off tomorrow night fork new seals and oil. See what else I find

Threw a new clutch at it. 80hrs on the dodgy rebuilt one since I pulled the rekluse out, and the rubber dampeners where toast. Figured if I was oulling it apart to change them I’d do new plates. Turns out the full kit from KTM is cheaper than just buying individual plates so that’s a win. Plates, spring, rubbers and tab washer. Stoked the baskets still sweet.
Didn’t even need to wash the bike properly.

How did you find the rekluse clutch? I’ve never ridden a bike with one. Interesting idea

Sadly progress has slowed. Was hoping to be running for tomorrow but no go. Not going to rush as I want it back to how it was. Went to pick up tank but not happy with it. Opened filler cap and still see rust. Looked great when I took a look through bottom when fuel pump was out, was only a couple of lines of rust.
At a bit of a stand still now till I can fire it up.

It was good for not stalling, but if trying hard enough on a really shitty climb you could still get it to stall. The bike lost throttle response and made cracking the throttle at low rpm really vague. A few times stuck on some techy climb I’d struggle, not enough throttle and nothing would happen then too much and the thing would try to loop out. It acted a bit like a flywheel weight in that regard. Clutch pull was heavier and I use the clutch all the time on my trails to modulate power, I find myself holding a constant rpm and just playing in the friction zone to maintain grip so that sucked.

I didn’t like it. But a 300 2t has amazing low down chuggability so I don’t think the benefits of a rekluse are worth it for these bikes. Sending a 500exc down these trails yeah I guess it’d make sense and I know some dudes swear by it, but imo those guys should’ve bought 300’s for around here haha.

Nice day yesterday, so took the VStrom out for a blast. The weathers been so crap, I haven't ridden it in months.

I'm contemplating buying an SV650, as getting on and off the VStrom is doing my hip/groin in. Once I'm on it though, she a beauty.

Thought about lowering links?

Yes @cammas thanks for information … but I have been looking at the lowering links.

When I first bought the bike, it felt like a chopper so I dropped the forks about 20mm through the triple trees, to get the thing to steer. Doing that and adjusting the sag helped a lot.

If I lower the back end a significant enough amount to actually allow me to swing my leg over it without screwing up my ancient body… then I’m back to riding a chopper again.

The other thing is that I’ve become awfully used to sitting upright and having a screen and bark busters. Can I be bothered with riding a naked bike again? Ok, my SS50 is naked but maxes out at 80k’s… more than that would be very blowy.

Sue is fine with me buying a different bike, but reckons I should just get the gym to tailor some exercises to overcome the lack of a labrum in my left hip. I’m not sure it is even possible. The only thing holding the cartilage in my left hip in place is glue. The only thing that makes it flair up in pain is getting on and off the VStrom.

Decisions.

It’s been a while since I’ve ridden one but I don’t remember a chopper feel, I know with 1000 if you put a 650 seat on them you get a bit of clearance and a lower seat height, which is my issue as I’m short and have the flexibility of a steel bar.

The only options you have is try and trim some of the foam out and recover it for more clearance, from memory they’re pretty generous on the foam or buy a new bike 😉. I just missed out on a Varadero 1000 as I’ve been busy, but I keep seeing Vstrom 1000s for sale with decent kilometres and prices but I going to buy a van first for the MTBs then I’ll get another bike.

Seat height is not an issue for me, as I find it very comfy and can tippy toe when stationary, no worries.

It is just getting on and off the thing.

After a 2 month wait for my WP mounts, I received a refund.
Time to support the locals

That’s a shit go. 2 months is taking the piss.

You won’t be disappointed with the MSC stuff. I had a a pretty decent spill last weekend, bike did some cartwheels and nothing twisted.

The cartwheels motos can take, to then walk over pick it up (assuming you're in 1 piece) and its all good is amazing...

They handled it shit also. I ordered on 13th September, was told stock would be mid October. I was happy to wait. Yesterday I got an email to say I’ve been refunded and should see money in 10 days. No explanation, not sorry for stuff around. I have emailed a please explain but not sure I’ll hear anything.

I’ve ordered a MSC set so will see how that goes

They can take some punishment that’s for sure.
I flipped a wr400 on a grass airstrip doing wheelies. This was 2000. I landed on my arse and just slid. Not even a bruise.
The bike didn’t slide. Silencer dug in and it ripped it 90* and set the bike cartwheeling. I thought I’d was a right off for sure. Bent bars, exhaust and somehow no other damage apart from grass and dirt everywhere. How it didn’t bend subframe is beyond me

Just a ding on the expansion chamber and a few extra scratches on the shrouds.
Back end kicked out into a nice little highside then I watched the bike smack the bars into the ground a few times as it rolled down a hill.
Pulled the clamps apart to see if it damaged the rubber grommets or bent any of the bolts and nope, still in good knick.

KTM still having dramas with the reshuffle. That’s some terrible after sales service.
I did have some luck with my local dealer, rang up and ordered a new clutch kit in the morning and they had it delivered to the store that afternoon, managed to pick it up same day.

My next bike will be a sherco or reiju. The guys I talk to that have them have been looked after whenever they’ve needed spares. The local distro’s went above and beyond got them
