Melbourne info wanted

I
Last time I was there for work I had to stay in Glen Waverly, which is suburban hell compared to St Kilda/ Fitzroy etc, but had the most fantastic Vietnamese restaurant near the hotel, which would make me think about staying there again. It's a bit far out from the CBD, but on a train line.

Christ, yer practically back in NSW there! (although to be fair I consider Richmond to be a bit of a trek...) Taxi fares are astronomical to get out that way though (50-60 bucks from CBD last time I went) and I think it's a dry suburb (there's a few out that way)

Actually whilst I'm on a bit of a rant can I just vent my spleen on the ridiculous suburb names in the Eastern Suburbs? Glen Waverly is not in a fucking glen and it is certainly not overshadowed by Mount Waverly- I agree it may be on a slight bump in the terrain but to call it a mountain is just f***ing barmy! Might as well have a go at Bayswater whilst I'm at it. Why's it called Bayswater? It's about as far away from the sea as you can get without ending up in f***ing Alice Springs. Sort it out Melbourne!

sick...i can walk to richmond man from the city.
god damn lazy poms.

what's worse is when there is a shop at the boundary of street names.

take Malvern rd and Glenferrie rd,
the Shell on the corner for some reason has to be in the suburb called Glenvern!!! - i dont see any connection here. nearest suburbs are toorak, armadale and malvern

then you have north rd, that goes south.

maybe someone can clear this,
where does st kilda road actually starts?
from flinders st station or after the bridge?
then what is the bridge's name?

It's not really laziness, I'm just frightened by suburbia and Richmond is the last outpost for decent food and pubs without pokies...

After the bridge I'd say. I think it's known as Swanston St bridge.

No one has mentioned North Melbourne yet? God...this suburb used to support 178 odd pubs...back at the turn of last century, but there's still a wealth of interesting establishments for those who wish to have a bite to eat and a drink...

Let's see - Start at the corner of Victoria St and Elizabeth St, just opposite the meat section of the Vic Market - you can't go past the public bar ($5 jugs on a Monday night), then walk up through the Market heading west until you hit Peel St. Have a look across the road for The Drunken Poet, a lovely little irish bar run by one of the nicely ladies I've ever met. Excellent feel there with great pints. Basically, if you just walk west up Victoria St until you hit Errol St, you'll find many a nice bar, cafe or pub.

There's also plenty of backpackers accom if that takes your fancy.

Yeah, i did (in an earlier post-same topic) but it's such an inconsequential place that even a resident ended up ignoring it. Can't blame you, really...
For the record though, there are a couple of decent drinking establishments in the centre of the 'burb (the Town Hall gets a mention in dispatches as does the pub with no name and bev 'n' micks) but for f***s sake! Wander around North Melbourne after 10pm. You'll just be shuffling past warehouses and overpriced units, endlessly looking for a street with a bit of atmosphere but never finding one.

As the often maligned Stereophonics once said: "There's more life in a tramps vest"...

Thread resurrection!

Any good shouts for hotels in Melbournia CBD or Southbank?

Nice but not over the top ; cool vibes if possible, prefer boutique but happy to stay in the majors if the price is not over the top eg Crown.

Close to bars and restuarants would be cool.

On that note, any decent steak houses recommended? There's an Argentinian one I here is quite cool.

Is Flower Drum still rated?

Didnt Melbourne score a few steak houses on the world's best steak houses list earlier this year?

If the Argentinean place you are talking about is Asado, I've eaten there a couple of times. It's pretty good.

Do yourself a favour and drop onto ponyfish Island.

Ponyfish Island is now officially on the list cheers Pinky

Yeah that's the joint - Asado.

That world best list seems a little dodgy. I've eaten at most of the Sydney ones, no Woodcut to be seen and I have not eaten a better steak in Sydney. Caveat - I still haven't eaten at Firedoor nor had a steak at Margaret though I have eaten there.

Anyway ignoring Victor Churchill as I don't fancy sitting in a butcher shop, if anyone can say if any of Steer, Gimlet, Matilda, Meatmaiden or Grill Americano are better than Asado please let me know 🙏

Hotel- we’ve ‘staycayed’ at the W a couple times. Very funky boutique hotel. Great atmosphere and vibe.

Olive Tree in South Melbourne is my favourite for steak anything here. Will be pretty close to you if staying in Southbank/CBD.

I detest Crown, but a couple of their hotels in Southbank are annoyingly good.

Wise. The drinks are good and it's a cool spot.

Well funnily enough I first went there and ponyfish on the same night. The funniest part at asado came at the end of my meal. I had ordered dessert and was asking about their fortified offerings. There was one I wasn't familiar with. Waitress goes to the bar to ask for a description. Bar tender looks to me, makes some gestures that I recognise as he will send me a little sample...waitress shoots it. Bar tender looks confused. Waitress tells me "its good". Hmmm...otherwise faultless and good.

Margaret is pretty high on my list.

Off the back of that list there seems to be plenty of places suddenly making steal their thing without the price tag or theatrics of places like bisteca. Lots of great midweek steak deals and being i am generally working on weekends, midweek suits me just fine.

Margaret is highly recommended though as with most of Mr Perry's previous joints the pricing precludes frequent visits.

He's turned that part of Double Bay into a cool must visit spot. The new Asian place he opened was also pretty good, saw Eddie Jones there on the night we went LOL

I hope you walked past and muttered 君は本当に最低だよ
Hmm, my translation looks like it was cleaned up by the Gooogles

If you want some really fkin good modern Middle Eastern food, go to Maha... Don't bother with the Signature experience, you'll get some good food but you're paying for artwork on a plate... Just get the Souffra and if you can still fit dessert get that too.

I don't know who eddie Jones is.

I have studied the website and thought the prices were fairly balanced given reputation of the venue/owner and also what shitty places are charging for a night out at the moment.
