This Ben Roberts-Smith stuff is pretty wild. If reading various media outlets is to give any kind of gauge for the story behind his arrest the you can quickly see it looks like a battle between media outlets trying to one up each other. It sounds to me like one of those media outlets has baited and paid someone who may have been around the guy on tour when shit went down to spill his guts now they're all calling for the guys head. It could be someone who got yelled at by a superior has hurt feelings and wants revenge? Could be someone near to a person going through PTSD and convinced them to get in someone's ear? Who knows. To stage an investigation for so long and get to a point that they can arrest him must have some merit via evidence I guess but geez the whole thing feels off.
The bigger test of our nations integrity will be who else is eventually dragged into this? Already the story indicates others with him have also committed war crimes and we all know "just following orders" is no defence.
Yep, you're right. It'll expose some stuff either way and will likely pave the way for others seeking fortunes to spill their guts on things that the general public should not have an ear to.
The public should definitely be aware of it. If our defence forces are perpetrating unlawful acts of barbarity they should be held to account and the public made aware. To cover it up would breed distrust among the populace. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were unpopular enough to begin with, if it war crimes were confirmed and prosecuted etc but the details hidden from the public the nation's confidence in the defence force would be significantly eroded. Transparency is very important.
Trial by media is not the way, and our media is generally a circus of gooning goof balls at best.
Mind blank on the name of the whistle blower that was punished for blowing his whistle...
100% correct, I meant we don't need the gory details creating more of a shitstorm.
Sad news that a 14 year old kid died after a crash at Stromlo over the weekend. Not sure of the specifics.
Devastating for the family, thinking of them.
