Is it a bicycle or a motorbike? Fight Fight Fight

This. The ship has sailed. And as if kids want to pedal these days.
The wave of non-compliant e-bikes that have been imported into Australia was allowed following changes to the Australian Design Rules under the Road Vehicle Standards Act in 2021 that removed reference to the internationally recognised standard for e-bikes. That's why we are where we are today.

What I can't get my head around is young teenagers on the moto-x style e-bikes. Where do they get them from? Do their parents just willingly buy them one?

Maybe I'm highlighting my lower-middle class upbringing where I was lucky to get a big present for a bday or xmas, def. nothing in between.

Despite what people say about the cost of living, most things are comparatively much cheaper than when we were kids.

When I was a kid you were rich if you had two TVs. That and the fact that people are more comfortable to be in debt these days.
Just look at the kids that ride around on high end MTBs.

Dunno about that, when I bought my first adult-sized bike at the age of 15 in 1991, the $175 I paid for it was a pretty big outlay. When it got written off in 2006, the LOWEST quote for an entry-level replacement was around $900!

with Qld seeming to be the well ahead in proposing new rules, saw an interesting comment. imagine people coming for the olympics and being told you cant hire an ebike without a licence.

They could hire a bicycle (they'd probably be horrified they have to wear a helmet too) :)
