Helmet - expiry by time

Haakon

has an accommodating arse
Just bought a brand new helmet on a sale by Giant - and it’s got a 2019 manufacturing date!!

Super annoying. Am I wrong to be annoyed…?

Do they go off, like tyres? I genuinely have no idea.

If not then I guess it’s fine.

if stored out of sunlight, the EPS, and strap webbing will last on this earth much longer than you.
the interior squishy foam is likely be the first to get funny, and then the plastic fittings of the straps.. (both replacable)

it was a very cheap helmet...

you could email Giant and ask if OK at that age... maybe they'll offer newer replacement :)

Glues would defininitely degrade over time, and soft/rubbery components may dry out and crack.

Plenty of people who buy vintage/collector sneaker shoes then wonder why they fell apart upon first wear, when they'd been in a display box for a good part of 10 years

I get pissed off buying motorbike helmets, they have a 10 year life even if only worn once. They must just fall apart or something!
I got denied at the drag strip for an out of date helmet that I had bought 4 years before. Date was 8 years old when I bought it

Yeah, it can be annoying to have some of your service life spent as shelf-life. Personally, I've never checked dates, I just replace helmets that have been used.

And the head that was in it!

Was that your head @Lazmo ?

Ha ha yes, that's my stupid head back in 2013.

Back when the Lysterfield Aneurysm trail had table-tops with kickers, which I helped build.

Besides the fractured skull, I had a broken/dislocated finger, hyper extended torn neck muscles, ruptured supraspinatus, torn rotator cuff and contusions aplenty. My neck hurt the most by far, I thought it was broken, but I came good after about 10 minutes of laying there, so I rode out.

I was in my mid 50's, back when I'd get actual air... a thing of the past for me these days.

Aneurysm sounds like quite an apt name! Sounds like you were quite lucky in some ways. 😬
