Hayes Dominion brakes.

Hurts. Requires Money. And is nerdy.
Is there much power difference from E4 to V4? The internet says it’s very minimal
No idea. There’s never too much brake so when I bought my hopes I just went straight for the V4.
Two of the pistons in each caliper are larger, otherwise they’re the same I’m pretty sure.

Two 16mm leading pistons and two 14mm whereas E4 is 14mm all round. Although Hopes website says E4 has 16mm all round wonder if a typo or silent update.

Outright stopping force feels about the same, but it feels like it comes on a little earlier has a bit more oomph in the mid lever pull - difference is not massive however.

I had E4's, upgraded the front caliper to a V4 as the E4's used to feel a bit undergunned on steeper/longer runs. V4 front felt better, but still keep the more progressive feel of Hope brakes compared to some of the more aggressive feeling brake setups (Shimano/Formula, etc...).

The V4s have a slightly bigger pad as well.

Sorry @Ultra Lord but my Saints/Formulas/ TRPs shit all over your V4s. And then we get these bad boys. Mwahaha

Anyway, nsmb gave the Dominions a good write up.

Pretty much my experience as well. V4s definitely feel more consistent on a real long DH drag at places like Maydena

Hope should of stuck with the the single 25mm piston in the V2. One-day I'll find some trial zone calipers actually in stock and switch them..

That picture of mine above are Hope V2 floating discs. Those V2s must have been beastly.

Yup. Haven't seen a pair under 300 pound in a long time, not bad for a new 10 year old brake. They could pull up 100kg+ guys without effort. It's a shame that the braking systems new brakes price is so high as they've gone with a massive single piston too, but 999euro was abit much...

Thanks all for the feedback. V4s were actually at the top of the list for my next brakes, primarily because a) Hope and b) industrial porn - especially in naked alloy. However a mate with (new) E4s has been consistently having problems with them which is diluting the appeal a bit. Hence looking at other options.

Basically I want something with the monster truck awesomeness of Saints but with a bit more modulation. MT7s are also a consideration. Keep hearing good things about Code RSCs too but the scars of Sram Avid brakes run deep....

TRPs might be up your alley. Great modulation and super solid build quality. Just make sure to get uberbike racematrix pads.

Formula Cura4s are a step up in power, I would say they are probably the most powerful modern brake I've tried, but also have good modulation. Maybe the 2 pot Curas would work well for you?

I don't run Maguras because they are fiddly pieces of plastic.

What issues is your mate having with the E4s? Mine have been brilliant and I am hesitant to change. Hopes won’t have the world stopping power of other brakes but the control/modulation is brilliant and a solid pull on the levers will bring you to a stop.

EDIT - as @Oddjob said Magura carbotec can cause broken screws and stripped threads if your not careful.

Thanks - yeah I should be looking at TRPs too. They do look purty and if they're good enough for Gwin.. Formulas weren't on the radar at all - I'll do some research on the Curas, cheers. Also, yes - Maguras sure do look cheap.

Actually just chucked in a set of Galfa pads on the other bike. Feel very impressive so far but hopefully a trip to Red Hill on Sunday will confirm.

The Shimano speciality of wandering bite point has been afflicting his pretty consistently since new. He's quick so having brake levers that randomly sink to the bars without doing much else aren't ideal. They've been back to the shop multiple times and finally seem to be working but yeah, not really good enough for a premium product imo.

Weird. Could have been a bad seal. That’s one thing I love about my Hopes. Solid lever every time. The bite point and reach adjust are very effective. Can get the lever just right.

They are not a set and forgot brake though. Need to check every few months the pads are hitting disc evenly and if not typically a case of pulling pads and cleaning/lubing pistons and good to go.

TRP look good too.

TRP DHR EVOs if you want the lots of power and modulation. Running them with 223mm 2.3mm thick rotors. Pulls 95kg of me up quick smart. Especially with their new pad compound the system is impressive.
Have also heard only good thing about the Hayes. Only thing that put me off was the colour not matching my bike.

I've got a set of E4s on one bike and V4s on another. Had them both for around 4 years. E4s have had a couple of bleeds, and one sticky piston, which was a piece of piss to solve (pop it out, lube and push back in). V4s one bleed. Other than that pad changes and rock solid
