I really miss "the good old days". I went to so many Grand Prix' and looked forward to the next one the day after the last one. I cannot stand what it has become though and the 2014 race was my last. It does look as though the venue has kept improving for the fans over the years and it truly is a nice place to watch fast cars.

Now, I'm gonna be that guy and say.................................................... those first few laps looked staged. I get it, the battery bullshit causes the dramatic drop in speed but it just looked way too rehearsed just to get people watching it hyped. I've seen enough fake bullshit over the years in F1 and that slots nicely into the same category. For reference, the "exciting" Australian Grand Prix had 120 total passes. Earlier that morning a normal and actually exciting Indycar race at Phoenix had 565 passes. In a Dennis Denuto voice "If you like car racing, don't watch F1. Watch Indycar". ;)
 
Just my two cents worth about the whole "racing" thing in F1...

The Mercedes was fastest in pre season testing
The Mercedes was fastest in unofficial testing
The Mercedes was fastest in official testing
The Mercedes was fastest in Barcelona testing
The Mercedes was fastest in practice at the Australian GP
The Mercedes was fastest in qualifying at the Australian GP
The Mercedes qualified 1-2 for the GP
The Mercedes finished 1-2 at the GP

Damon Hill, Gunter Steiner and just about everyone else I saw on TV, tipped the Merceds to win in Australia
Damon Hill, Gunter Steiner and just about everyone else said George Russell has alreday won the F1 title, if he keeps it on the track?

Now I don't want to shit on a sport that many of you guys love to watch, but exactly what is the point of F1 nowadays?
 
You'd have to have a short memory to forget that Mercedes absolutely dominated the hybrid era (2014-2021), a couple of lean years recently in the ground affect era. Seeing as the powerplant appears to be a key factor I'm not surprised they might've got it right (as they did in 2014).

You can't argue the growth of the viewership has come from the Netflix show's influence. The stuff that happens on the track hasn't been the focal point for a long time. People who don't even know what the word camber means just watch it for the staged drama off the track I guess.
I have pals that used to scoff at me for getting excited to watch noisy Formula One cars for three days and come home with ringing ears. Now they watch the Netflix show showing last year's drama and some of them even watch the 7 minute highlight package on Youtube! They also condemn me for not watching it now.
For what it's worth, one of the Yankee owners said he couldn't give two fucks for getting the V10's back as their audience watches the races on a mobile phone and those at the track like to be able to talk to people around them. What a fuckhead :D

I totally get it. In any aspect in life you could probably stand back and say "it was better way back when".

I have a sense of regret never seeing a V10 F1 race in the flesh. I do recall a time when Schumacher won alot. I wasn't really a fan of that. But it was his time to shine in the right car. That's F1.

I did see a V8 F1 race in the flesh in 2012. Was the sound better than today? Yes absolutely. Was the racing better? Compared to Sunday? No. Button got to the front and that was it. They were loud and fast but no one changed positions. That's F1.

In any form of F1 I've seen live it is sooooo much better than on TV. Even the hybrid/mixed powerplants sound tough. The speed is raw. How the hell do they go around corners so fast? It's impressive. Is it for everyone? No. But they can sure as hell thank DTS for how popular it is now!

There's a Netflix show?
 
As impressive as F1 is, and I love it, the grip from slicks and aero is incredible. Even adding slicks to our pissy track car shortens braking distances a huge amount. Go to wrc and see what they can do with no grip. Fucking amazing. And all brake, flick, crash in the same place.

No great surprise that both Bahrain and Saudi races have been cancelled with no replacements so a 22 race season (until the last 2 races are also cancelled).
 
I did enjoy the race, even though the Mercs did have the overall pace. Kimi's first win was good.

McLaren, what a mess. Piastri hasn't even raced a lap in 2 races! Lando's WDC defense in tatters!

Yeah not ideal for Mclaren, but overall it's looking a lot more promising. Margins were much closer between teams than in Australia, less than half a second between the top five in qualifying, and way fewer cars got lapped in the race.

McLaren would have probably been 5th and 6th if not lower. Not in the top 4 at this stage. I actually enjoyed the race. The Ferraris battling was as good as ever. Good for Ollie. He held a margin to Max until the Redbull traction engine failed.
