The standard response is it isn't the arsehole of the universe but climb a tree and you can see it from there. Emerald though isn't a bad place. Lots worse, try mounting Isa for one. We camped at Fairburn dam and that was a bit shit thinking back but we did get a basic electric blanket at hardly normals which stopped us freezing our gonads off further west in the Tvan when the temp got to a less than tropical -4C.

Even towed a caravan up there wtf. Must have taken ages to get up there or knew a few people in industrial sites/farms with 32A.
 
Anyone recommend the BYD ute? Im in Tassie so big drives are 3hrs max. What other electric utes are there? Looks like tge BYD has a decent tub size
I think it’s time to go electric for the daily.

Apart from the Shark (and there's two different versions now - three if you count the cab chassis one), there's a GWM Cannon PHEV thingy, a KGM Musso EV and Hilux EV. And Chery has the Stockman rolling out soon enough.

By the same token, there's quite the choice of battery electric and PHEV vans these days...
 
for the price byd shark is the best in terms of phevs.

there's obviously the ranger phev but i think for the money shark wins it.

Yes, yes I can. Scroll back a few (dozen) pages. We have the first generation version, and for what Mrs George does it is perfect. 12 months down the road and we have zero regrets. No major issues, other than it took 4 months to get parts after I clobbered a kangaroo early one morning. And it's big. Not impossible to park big, but definitely noticeable next to a Hilux/Ranger/Colorado.

There's also a PHEV Ford Ranger. But it, or at least it was, the most expensive and had the worst battery only range at the time we were looking.

48V Hilux is not an EV. The magic smoke machine just helps get things moving. Kinda like a kelpie with a herd. You can't drive on just electricity.

The Musso however doesn't have an ICE.

Which is where the cannon and Shark come to play. They had roughly the same EV only range and the similar total system power, but the philosophy of how they make the power differs. The GWM is a petrol ute with a battery, same as the Ranger. The Shark is an electric ute with a generator. We didn't gel with the interior of the GWM, we much preferred the Shark, but the Gen 2 Shark interiors aren't quite as fancy.

Bottom line: would I point one around Tassie? Yes I would.

I have a musso diesel, and got it for the size. Motorcycles in back which fit straight in with plenty room when tailgate down. So I welcome the size of the BYD.

I do lots of shuttling at 40kmh for 10min to reach the top of the mountain each run. But flip side the entire downhill for 10 mins woukd be charging? How do you think the BYD would go in that scenario, and also beach/sand driving experience?

I parked it in the shrubbery, the level of violence could be argued. As well as it's intelligence.

Real world it's more like 80km EV, 650km with a full tank of ppetrol. The standard test skewed the results and marketing took care of the rest.

It will eat it up, but you can't get around the physics of moving 3000kg uphill. You'll get a little bit back coming down, but will use much more going up.

For example, coming down into Adelaide through the hills fully loaded with the trailer we gain 3-4% battery back. Heading home back up the same hills we drain the battery and then it's dinosaur juice the rest of the way home.

There really actually is a Hilux BEV. I don't know why either.

I conveniently ignored the Franger PHEV because no-one should actually own a Franger (by all means lease one, just don't keep it).
