Electric Vehicles etc

I heard the new Shark comes around mid year, 3.5t towing and significant range upgrade - Don't quote me on this as I was only half listening to the convo
Yes that's right. Its getting a bigger ICE and battery. Bigger fuel tank too i think.

BYD like all the Chinese are rolling out improvements very fast. The Atto 3 just got a massive upgrade - looks the same, but moved to RWD, bigger battery, more power, moving the motor to the back gives it a big frunk and a shit tonne of other design changes. Nailed all the weaknesses (perceived and real) in one hit.

if battery only range is right i might be interested in changing over to that as i'd like to get into more 4x4'ing that my xpeng can't do lol.

for me if the battery only range is 80-100km im sold.

I really would kill for the Silverado ev though (Which you can get it via right hand conversion company) but looking at the price it on the American website it'd likely come in at around 150-200,000aud.

maybe 210,215k for the trailboss build..

A man can dream.

Have I got news for you!

Gen 1 already has 80-100km range, just don't go over 80 kmh, the thing is an aerodynamic brick. We get a solid 450km total range at 110 heading to Adelaide.

If you want a bargain though, Gen 1s will be cheap and there's already a couple of 120L long range tanks available.

I read the Aussie BYD top dog saying the Chinese guys are flooding him with options to make the products even more suitable.

I'll wait for proper door handles, and dials/buttons for HVAC/volume etc before I buy an EV.

I love my industrial strength door handles.

Volume/skip/cruise control are all on the wheel. The rest are largely redundant with voice control.

I press the mic button on the steering wheel and say "turn the heating up to 24 degrees and switch the fan to high".

Less distraction, because if the setting was at 21 degrees, that's 6 presses to reach 24 as most of them go up 0.5 at a time, sometimes buttons for each side, plus a press or two for fan speed, and several buttons that can break. How is that better?

Still happy enough to hold onto the Alfa for a while yet. Lot of buttons and very old school tech suite and we dont drive enough to be worried too much even if fuel does crack $3 a litre. I wouldn't mind if it had radar cruise though...

Sure, but if you were in the market for new, it would be pretty stupid to buy petrol because it has more buttons, which aren't any better when voice control is available.

Radar cruise is both the best and worst thing in vehicle tech. When it works and you're crusing on a country backroad it's amazing. Multi-lane highways with traffic merging in too close in front of you, or a misinterpretation of turning vehicles will test your sternum's resistance to seatbelt forces though...

I dunno, our Mini EV has all climate controls on the screen and I hate it. Very tricky to use on the move because it’s all too small. Annoyingly there’s a physical switch for the ‘fun’ driving modes which should have been a screen thing.

You just know that a product planner pushed that for dealership test drives. You try it a couple of times and never touch it again.

Yes you can talk to the car, but I can’t stand voice assistants and don’t use them.

If a car has to be screen dominated then at least Rivian have the right idea with the roller dials on the steering wheel which can adjust the HVAC look intuitive and nice to use.

When it comes time to replace my daily this will be a big factor for me.

I turn a dial a bit, it gets hotter or colder. I don't need to know the current temperature, I can just feel it with a dial.

I am not a regular voice assistant user, but for this it has made sense.

3 months in the car and I've adjusted the HVAC a handful of times, usually on getting in the hot car by accident because I forget I can make it cool beforehand. The voice command is usually "turn the fan down a little" once it cooled off.

I get that this is a big deal for some and habits are hard to break, but it just hasn't bothered me. Removing stalks, I couldn't deal with that.
