Electric Vehicles etc

I'm not going there, it's an electric bike.
' You're not even pedalling yourself'

No comebacks for ebiking - it's widely accepted.
"I apply the power output, we are one - man and machine working in perfect harmony, thanks to my ability to control it." Then run. Run fast and run far, or we may never hear from you again. :p

this is sarcasm right?

"Australia has no tariffs on Chinese EVs, unlike the US and EU, making it a preview of what open competition looks like."

I feel like buying a Tesla now is like buying a Nokia phone in 2009.
I personally don't think that's an accurate comparison. The differences in a model Y and sealion 7 are more to do with the driver ergonomics than anything else. There are a lot more similarities than the obviously different cars seem to suggest. They both have the same range, battery tech (at least for RWD, the awd model ys still run the old chemistry which imo is inferior for ling life). Heck even in Europe the model Y uses the same blade battery!

The big differences in the cars are to do with dirvier ergonomics (byd is more traditional in that sense). Tesla have Full self driving, and BYD looks like it will get that soon. Other points are the vehicle to load which may or may not be important to you. However the tesla is more efficient and has a longer track record so that will appeal to some.

The real issue for tesla is price (which wasn't the problem of nokia) and right now they are getting smashed. Model Y is costing about $64k DA while the SL7 is hitting $58k DA. BYD also throws in $3k cash back which is $55k DA and some franchises are throwing in 7kw chargers and free home batteries (not really free, but it's a good marketing trick). That's almost $10k less than the tesla, which doesn't even come with a charger, and you don't have to 'buy' into their way of life learning hot to drive their car and learning where to look at the speedo. For people on lease the BYD can be had for under $200 a week which is a psychological threshold.

I don't see that quote in the article, is it in the comments? I see a similar sentence, which I think is true:

"Australia has become a case study in what happens when Tesla faces real competition from China without a home-field advantage."

I personally don't think that's an accurate comparison.
Yeah definitely some sarcasm in my comment, but not far off I reckon. They are neglecting the car business because the CEO has different ideas, so all the good car things they were going to do (small car, roadster, actual full self driving) didn't happen and we have Cybercuck and Floptimus.

Tesla does not have a longer track record, they've just been available and known to us longer. By the time Tesla had released the Model 3 they had only sold 2500 Roadsters, BYD had moved 100,000 EV's. They still lead in efficiency, but that doesn't seem to be much of a factor for people switching from ICE.

Tesla wants to keep the share price high, so the car prices stay high. I remember Sandy Munro raving about how Tesla's way of doing things meant much higher margins than traditional makers so they could afford to drop prices and still be very profitable, which they kind of did but not by enough to compete.

Most people don't want to be seen in one, a bit like nobody wanted a flip phone because it was no longer cool (for totally different reasons though) when iPhone came out. That's me now, from fanboy to wouldn't be caught dead owning one, and not just because Musk is deplorable, there are now several other reasons.

Copy pasta straight out of the article when I read it.

If you believe there is a level playing field here, I have a bridge to sell you.

ps don't own a tesla, couldn't give 2 figs about Musk.

Does it come with a troll underneath?

It's true, I believe the earth is round. :)

However, going back to the tariffs on Chinese EVs we don't have any do we? As opposed to the US and EU, which have substantial trade barriers to protect their car industries. I think it might be optimistic if they think open competition is happening any time soon globally. - haven't read the article at all by the way.

I go off on tangents.

I like the look of the smaller Rivian.

Looks like a Lada restomod.
