Got the Volvo on Tuesday in Sydney, caught the bus up. Drove straight out to see a mate at Ryde and took him for a spin, he'd never been in an EV and had owned some quick rally cars, his mind was blown. I'd given it a little squirt and a V8 Commodore was in the next lane and saw it take off. We pulled up at the lights and he wound down the window, says "they go alright eh" and I smiled and said yeah. I belted if off the next lights and my mate said oh my god that's quick. One pedal driving also spun him out a bit. Sadly a back injury means he can't really drive or work much anymore but he was converted to the idea before he'd been in mine and it exceeded his expectations.
Headed back to Canberra, stopped at Pheasants Nest as I was pretty hungry by then, hung for 30 mins eating and using the facilities while the car got back to enough juice to get home, it was only getting 60Kw as I didn't tell it I was going to charge so no pre conditioning and also was still at 60 something percent. Arrived home with 26%. Put in 40% off the power point overnight. Went and tried out a fast charger nearby as a top up, again only drew 50Kw charging from an already high battery but the three other cars there only had 50Kw too so I'm very sus on some of these fast chargers actual capacity, had this experience in a hired Tesla too.
The Pilot Assist is very good, no false freak outs, lets you take command for a second if you don't like what it's doing but stays on. I don't know what Tesla does now but last one I drove broke out of assist whenever I gave a little bit of input like when it drove too close to a truck and I wanted it to move away. It's a very nice balance between basic lane keeping and (supervised) full self driving.
The software has been updated since reviews I'd seen and now has 3 modes, Range, Standard and Performance. Range is still like driving a Golf R but way more instant. Standard is nuts, and Performance is something I've never experienced before. You also have 2 levels or off for the one pedal regen braking, previously activating Performance mode would turn off one pedal. I really like one pedal so I'm happy with that change. This is great to see as there was plenty of feedback on reviews around the multiple presses to access the modes, now it's a button always on the screen that you can switch while driving.
The steering is really sharp, I lost concentration for a second going slowly around a tight roundabout in Sydney as a woman was running across the roundabout in front of a bus to try and catch it and I looked for a millisecond too long. Touched the kerb and put a 2cm graze on the rear inside wheel. Oh well, I ripped the scab of the first scrape off early, and I have some cover with the lease that gives me repairs for this sort of thing at a $50 flat rate so that will be put the the test.
I love the minimalist interior, and there's enough buttons and controls on the stalks to do what I need while driving. Voice commands do the rest very well, I've done play spotify, turn up the volume slightly, set the temperature to 21 degrees, set the fan to medium, navigate to home.
One thing that could be improved on lots of EV's (and even ICE now with all the camera tech) is built in dash cams, it's odd that you still have to install one.
That's minor though, there is nothing I am unhappy with.
