Electric Vehicles etc

The first run is of just 1,000 units and they appear to have quite a few slots left. They can't make more at scale because they don't have production capacity or the money to create it. Plus they've only just sorted out the first lot of tooling. There's no way they'll be delivering vehicles this year...

...and there's no way it'll be able to be sold here without demonstrating Australian Design Rule compliance, the lack of which has nixed a lot of otherwise good cars and motorcycles from our market recently. If we see the Aptera before 2026 I will be shocked.
Yeah it will be interesting.
I still dont get the ADR ratings sometimes, seems like certain people can import or drive things and just have them on the street and others without a lot money get left in the lurch.

These guys drove one almost a year ago now

From what I have heard is that the Australian ones are expected around December for those that have put money down. (A friend has put money down its only a small deposit but for a couple this could be a great little run around, especially if you live in an Apartment with some body corporates refusing to start the conversation at the moment regarding powerpoints for everyones car spaces.)
A few things to note, they fall under the motorcycle category hence a little less impact testing compared to a car, but given that should make them pretty light and easy to repair.
No, they are tricycles and there is a category in the ADRs for them. I wish they'd add quadricycles so I can have a Twizy...

ADRs are stupid and irrelevant now. They tried to change the rules so you could just recognise the source country (ie Japan and Europe etc all have robust safety and emissions standards, ADRs are duplicative at best), but the FCAI got in a new LNP minister ear about protecting the dealer racket and consumer choice was ditched for the interest of big business as is the usual LNP MO.

And now I cant have a Twizy :(

Yeah thats one thing I never get, you can get a Can-am 3 wheel bike and its fine under a motorcycle licence so I guess it must be a blurry line for these.

Probably the same for cars though, rules can be bent once its on Australian soil, Friends can run big block chevs on the streets without any problems, on full rego (Although I am fond of a big block chev or similar setup), yet so many other cars cant come into the country due to ADR rules.
Like the Mittagong street cruiser Mincer is always out and about, even a funeral we went to last week was full of burnout cars that were street rego'd and Im sure if they hit someone its end of life.

Its about protecting the dealer racket - not common sense or consumer choice.

Im not allowed to import some of the cars I want because they're not powerful enough...

One key point is that just because it's registered and driven on the street doesn't mean it's roadworthy and ADR compliant. That blower would definitely not comply and I'm sure there's dozens of other things with that car that wouldn't have been on it when it was registered.
You do have more leeway with older cars as they only have to comply with the ADR that was current when it was originally manufactured. I know of a lot of cars like the Capri here and they get some legal modifications done and after it's registered they add all this other stuff that's not legal.

Yeah makes sense, I always wondered how those things were able to pass engineers (I had trouble with a V6 Buick into a Gemini, years ago), so must be a height thing. As part of the street machine drag challenge is your car should be undefectable/road worthy and they get checked by cops when setting off (Probably a huge insurance issue if someone was running something illegal/publicity would be pretty catastrophic)

Also electric car wise looks like BYD has a ute coming, which hopefully wont be the 6 figures Rivians are expected to land at

So cheap, so cool, so illegal. We really are a dumb country sometimes...

I'm still tempted to import one anyway, stick some Renault Clio plates on it and see how it takes for them to arrest me!
A friend of mine drives his Can Am Defender around town in Tassie (200ish people in town though) all the time with no issues, and some suburbs on the Gold coast people drive Golf carts around so should be a plausible case.

And the solar challenge is almost on, these guys have to go as far as they can without a 'support vehicle' IE something blocking the road as they come along etc.

I know you can get away with things like a SXS on RV rego in Tassie but it's pretty restrictive. You have to nominate the roads and area that you need to drive on.

Here's the requirement for bonnet scoops...

Anything mounted to the engine, is not allowed to protrude through the bonnet, so all these blowers and turbos hanging out of the engine bay are illegal.

Oh ok so the ACT/NSW police aren't that bad then compared to other states in that case, now I understand why John Wilson/Engineer here used to get so angry when you turn up with those sorts of cars and charge very accordingly, a lot to know.

Its just dumb ADR bureaucracy - no one thought to add Quadricycle back when first written and because its not there we cant have a Twizy.

I know its not actually hard to add an amendment...

Just bring it over get a special vehicle permit on it.
Canberra has an EV show usually every year and theres more and more home built cars turning up with full rego.
Theres even the Corbin Sparrow which is always at the ANU

This was a while ago but theres lots of 3 wheelers and utes etc that have been converted at home. Lots of cool engineering (last years one had two halls full at exhibition park)

Edit here it is

Quite a few people had Tesla bits and peices but similar to the Subarus and Audi's auction prices are being pushed high at the moment as the spares market is pretty good cash wise.
This place also does the Japanese to NZ conversion of Teslas so you can get all the normal charging and all that too.

Thats a thought - import the "parts" and "assemble as a home build"...

Past life I worked away from home and had a flat in a group of 12 or so. One occupant was a recent client employee from down south. Had an old Ford ute with a mailbox like that Torana but it was fabricated from sheet metal and all corners and sharp edges. It was so big a cow could stand in front and be hidden from view. It was a drag car but still had NSW plates. Was giving us shit because he couldn't register it up here. Local mechanic wouldn't look at it, tried a few engineers etc and no go. Was being quite a dick about it. He wanted it registered so he could street drag. Anyway one evening after a few drinkies I cleared the junk mail out of my box and sort of posted it in that slot. This then became a bad habit 4 or 5 of us adopted. One Sunday when I arrived back for the next week old mate was sniffing around the car as I drove in. My first thought was oh oh he is going to go apeshit if he lifts the bonnet and sees what us aged juveniles had done. But no he started it. Car disappeared in a cloud of mulched paper. Oops. He never said anything...
