My little tail of new year drama.
30 December I came around a right hand bend which had a berm into a sharkfin style jump. Think I yanked a little hard while still leaned over which put me out of balance once in the air with weight shifting to the left. Landed ok but as was lent left the bike shot left off the trail downhill.
Unlucky for me, there happened to be a fallen tree which caught my left foot as I slammed it down.

After dragging myself back to the car and getting to hospital, initial X-rays showed a fractured ankle.
Not of huge concern, so they stuck me in a cam-boot.
Luckily someone decided it would be a good idea to do a CT scan as well, where they found a broken talus in addition to the ankle. So was then put in a cast for two weeks while I consulted with 2 ankle specialists.

Due to my 'young' age lol (43) and active lifestyle, both specialists agreed I would need to have surgery to pin the talus back together. Or risk possible problems as I age.

So last Thursday, I had 2 screws put into the talus. During surgery they decided there was no further need to also pin the ankle. (They thought they might break it further while attending to the talus).

So now in a weird bandage boot thing for two weeks before hopefully going into a cam-boot for a further 4 weeks, with no weight bearing. So looking like up to 9 weeks all up before what could be an extensive rehabilitation can finally start.

Hope the recovery passes smoothly and as quickly as possible @Chriso_29er. Always a tedious time. :(

This was my Talus bone break. It healed ok without surgery.

8 weeks in a cast though!

The broken off bit on yours does look a bit busted up, with little bits floating around so that maybe why.

Looking like a great time for a @Minlak type of challenge. Start the bidding at 25 push ups and 10 chins daily increasing each week by a factor of 1.25.

Heal well mate!

That's shit @Chriso_29er .

I reckon you need to put in a complaint to the land manager and get all trees cut down, and trail debris cleaned up.

In fact, bulldoze that berm and shark fin. Can never trust those things :D

Best wishes for a speedy recovery mate!

Don't even joke about it, those trails are within Cooee of somewhere that has done that sort of thing in the past

@Chriso_29er - this all sounds like not much fun. I usually figure you're in for a bad time if you learn a new word when talking about an injury, there was some new words there. You're probably all set, but yell out if you want a stationary trainer for rehab. I've got a spare one here for anyone in need.

Funilly enough, the area it happened has been earmarked for a major clearing works, that I'm actually against, along with many other local groups. And will possibly see the trail destroyed again. But that's a whole other topic.

They did keep mentioning about cleaning it out. But not sure that was the only reason. There were also mentions of ankle stability/movement range and pain in the future.

But I'm always amazed how different medical opinions can be. Even between the two surgeons that looked at me, one wanted the cast to stay on until surgery, the other wanted to immediately go back into a boot again!

Surgery may be the better option. My ankle is pretty good 90% of the time but I don't have the range of movement bending upwards that I used to and I have tweaked it a few times with a heavy landing on the bike or occasionally walking on uneven ground. Maybe surgery could of helped, but who knows.

A guy on another forum (let’s call him Fred) has medical issues that has seen 1 leg amputated and was seeing the same surgeon and was in prep to get the other leg amputated - The surgeon he has been seeing was unavailable and new surgeon came in. Fred goes "Ok Doc when do I lose the leg?" and the surgeon goes - 'Why are you losing the leg?" "We can just run an artery past blah into blah put the blood flow back that will get rid of the infection and gangrene" 6 ish months later not only did he keep his leg he has managed to get walking on a prosthetic un aided. ^ mths prior he was days away from being legless its only fate / luck whatever a new surgeon got involved.

If I don't like the answer from any Medicine Man I go somewhere else and don't even let them have an inkling of what the first person said - Unfortunately they all agreed I was ugly :(

First crash on the cargo bike. Front end washed out on some loose, crushed bluestone gravel. Luckily it was at low speed, the kids are fine. My elbow took the brunt of 140kg of bike and people.
I tried to scrub it out as much as possible while the adrenaline was surging. Betadine and some patches and I'll see how I go. I reckon it will hurt more tomorrow.
