Ox-Ford dictionary defines…If an ox is castrated it's still an ox. An ox is a bull that's used for work rather than hamburgers. Unless you're talking about Jap ox which is a stear of a particular weight.

The castrated male is called a steer until it attains its full growth, and then, an ox; but if castrated somewhat late in life, it is called a stag. The male, not castrated, is called a bull.
