How would this go as a trail bike? I know someone chasing a first bike but I'd hate to put them off with something tough to get around lysty on.

Well I would suggest that it would be perfect.
Mine is a great ride, with a lefty, but would also suit a totem perfectly

Having played with one in a XC situation...it'd make a much better trail bike.

you Would be hard pressed to find a better entry level bike for for the dough
At the moment, yeah pickings are definitely pretty slim. I'm concerned that a noob might find it a bit ...squishy... For a ride that doesn't involve shuttling. and I think Safreeks review of the situation needs to be taken with a pinch of salt given that he thinks 5kg 160mm bombers are xc forks

Wouldn't mind a bit more spec detail, some of it I can up spec with what I have in the shed but if those forks are on the husky side I won't be able to do much to help.

Where in Melbourne are you this week? If it doesn't work out, I'll be in Traralgon next Friday and can probably make an extra stop on the way out or back...

what if this "noob" understood the bike was a work in progress? At this price and with a 1.5 straight head tube...it isn't going to be hard to find a much lighter fork for the front end. They could even go mullet! Then with air front and rear, a bit of extra air in the suspension and squish be gone.

Yeah, you definitely don't have to upsell the idea of a 1.5 head tube to me

I agree that it's got some potential, I'd just hate to see them put off initially though.

What size shock does it take too?

ill dbl check shock 200mm but can’t remember stroke comes with extra shock
I’m driving to cbd and back Sunday otherwise I’m in lakes entrance
bit of a mist mast of parts
giant bars stem Teatro brakes
older 9 speed drivetrain
new giant seat
could easily fit a 27.5 in rear

The Prophet was a great bike for it's time, a little more trail and less XC than the same era Rush.
Won't be the same as modern geometry but would go alright as a first dual suspension bike.

Bear in mind it's unlikely to have 1.5" head tube, it'll probably be the Cannondale proprietary 'not quite 1.5"' with a specific headset. Won't be a problem with the headset fitted though.
