Also hope that it's not a shared walking trail as they'd discussed previously. The issues with that are self evident (clearly not to them, though...).

I think the scope always included a shared section, but only at the very bottom where the trail meets the river and heads back to the Cotter camp ground. From memory the return climb trail may be shared as well, which I'm OK with as long as the descent is unambiguously descending mtb only.
