I just had exastoses (bony growths) removed from my ear canal (swimmers/surfers' ear) and I don't mind saying it doesn't tickle.

It's 4th day post op and the pain still has not subsided as much as I'd hoped. Thursday afternoon straight after was good but then you are still pumped full of anaesthetic and other pain killers. The worst part is I can't chew anything hard as it really hurts the ear, it's like having a broken jaw. I can't put a helmet on yet but hope to by the end of the week and just ride bike trails. I've had some pretty serious ops with more pain but this is right in the middle of your head so there's no getting away from it and too many pain killers are literally a pain in the arse!

I don't want your sympathy...otherwise I'll fold, I want your abuse! Anger gets me a lot further, it's a great coping mechanism!

WTF is surfer's ear ?? how do you get this shit ? I surf at Sydney beaches am I stuffed?? Shit my ears hurt just thinking about it.

I'm hoping its a white genetic thing as pay back for spreading small pox to several indigenous and non indigenous peoples of the world. Bit like Skin cancer, as an aside I was told by an Asian Dermatologist that only white people get skin cancer, must be true.

No I passed on that and had my femur severed and re-attached to assert my manhood.

I have learnt all about expectorating as you can't blow your nose.

It's through surfing or swimming in cold water. Asians probably don't get it, though they surf, because they don't live anywhere cold enough. Now since you live in the Blue Mountains I'd estimate the amount of times you surf you will have to worry about death much sooner than surfers' ear!

I've had a referral to a specialist for this sitting on my desk for a several months. I just can't bring myself to make the appointment. I think they want to remove my ear to get in there. I'm not up for that at all, I'd rather just go on with buckets of Otodex, asking everyone to repeat what they just said, and watching TV with subtitles.

@Slowman Any chance through the fog of old age you remember how your operation was done? Drill, chisel, ear removal?

My surfing mates had it done .
Mine were fairly bad but with that plus all the hassling in the water i stopped at 28 yo and took up skiing.
Telemark skiing is close to surfing and it has a nice vibe with no crowds.
Now I am old and bit deaf but it isn't any worse.
