well there is upside - the reality will likely spur a lot more R&D into fusion and in the short to medium term, fission which hopefully can accelerate production at scale, advancements in safety, reduction in cost, minimisation and safe disposal of waste.

And remember we need the power to make AI "git gud" so we can eventually see such spaceship overlords as Falling Outside the Normal Moral Constraints

I'm happy as fuck that I work in a largely manual industry that A.I. can't get its venomous teeth into. It means I have to use my natural intelligence to enact motor skills to do stuff.

30-odd years ago, my dad went through the same kind of industrial redundancy that A.I. is inflicting now. He worked in commercial-level photographic processing, as in proper film, darkrooms etm, pushing out poster (or bigger)-sized prints for years. Digital photography killed his entire industry in a very short time.
 
I am confused as to the planning approvals that go through - We have a solar farm / battery storage facility that is trying to get built up here and the approval got denied as its too close to the main highway as in the event of an emergency the exclusion zone needs to be 22kms and would close the high way.

They are currently appealing in court etc - But then you see these massive data centres being approved when in reality they would be prefect for outer edges of cities and rural areas as they can provided jobs that dont require travel to the city

Part of the datacantre game is targetting areas where it is easier to get approved for space, power and water. That might be town vs town, or country vs country... they suck up the easiest/cheapest resources first.

Once built, hard to get that power/water back...
 
Not a big user of AI but I'm running a coding specific model locally that can pretty much answer all of my syntax questions and has helped several times get a start on an algorithm that I need. I would not trust it to refactor a project etc but it is an incredible offline resource. Used it on the plane on my last trip overseas when I didn't have internet access and couldn't access the c++ core guidelines (sometimes can't remember some of the less used ones).

Although ran locally it is fast enough to be usable and doesn't involve any data leakage to douchbag tech bros. Hopefully locally ran AI is the way of the future and the big data centres can go and eat a bag of dicks.

I'm thinking/hoping that in the future these big data centres won't be needed.
 
got a spreadsheet for creditors to load - so ABN's, bank accounts, phone numbers. Excel wants to display in scientific format and third party tool that uploads to the as400 keeps that. so try the usual tricks of the text formula etc. dont work. Get someone with a licence to ask copilot to fix and it does. but it sent a 2 pages word vomit on what it had done, none of which made it clear it had simply formatted the cells. AI did the task but had no idea what the goal of a simple question was and how to communicate it was done.

so whilst useful, AI needs a lot of human coverage to get even basics done

Yeah. The Mac desktop boxes with the unified memory seem to perform well but the ram price has made them stupidly expensive (and they are from Crapple). Is there some specific AI intended machine coming? There's some recent news on units coming from China next year.
