Sweet. Wasn’t apologising to you.
Hey Irck. You're a Muppet.

1. My super deluxe has 9 clicks and 10 settings. Yours is not a special Norco custom thing.
The settings were deliberately changed in the redesign from Monarch to Deluxe to give more effect per click. Look it up. Just because there's is less clicks does not mean there is less adjustment. It's a ratio.

2. Hifiandmtnbikes made a straight forward contribution that was succinct and accurate.

3.If your shock had 27 clicks it would have 28 positions. If it had 1 click, it wild have 2 positions. Geddit?

4. LBS 'wisdom' is never gospel.

Haha ok.

1. Cheers. The number of clicks was the only info I sought in my original post. Obviously sorted now but I couldn’t find that info prior to contacting Norco or else I wouldn’t have bothered posting. Clearly my googling needs some work. Could you please point me to a link that has that info as I wouldn’t mind having a read through it?

The shock is actually is actually a “special Norco custom thing” (that one I could google). I get that the Super Deluxe has been around for ages but being that this one was resized and tuned specifically for the Optic and (having no previous experience with the Super Deluxe) I didn’t know if this meant that they had a reduced number of clicks. My bad.

Not sure why you’re trying to clarify the level of adjustment, but less clicks exactly means less adjustment. E.g. 20 clicks of rebound would give the user a finer range of adjustment as opposed to only having 9 (21 positions/settings as opposed to 10 positions/settings... again, pretty sure nobody ever refers to their rebound settings on this fashion). This means you have more than doubled your amount of adjustment within that same range. Please don’t confuse this with me saying that I want or need that finer level of adjustment.

2. Hifiandmtb didn’t address what I was asking but that’s all good, I get that there was miscommunication and he (or she) was trying to be helpful.

3. Yep. Thanks for the unnecessary clarification. Again, nothing to do with what I was asking.

4. No one said anything about a LBS. Not sure what your point is?

Just to hopefully make things clear, the original post just asked if 9 clicks of rebound was standard on the Optic’s Super Deluxe as it’s the first I’ve owned. Not sure what’s with the outrage over setting/position terminology or LBSs but I’m loving the passion

I've been out on this a couple of times since fitting the carbon wheels and it's made a substantial difference to how snappy the bike feels. It's still not as fast uphill as my Intense but it certainly makes up for it in climbing traction and down hill prowess.
Xtr 12 speed shifter is still borked so will have to warranty it.

Also, if you have a microspline 12 speed from our favourite fishing supply company make sure you lube up the splines like a porn star at a gang bang. Fucking thing just kept creaking until I had schmoo between all the contact points and I'm still not convinced it's 100% silent.

I took this for an actual ride yesterday (not just a 25km loop of Yarra Trails) and did the Cascades trail at Lake Mountain. I was riding with a mixed crew of guys on 100mm XC race bikes and 160mm AM bikes and I'm pretty sure the Optic was the best choice for the day. I've got the climbing sorted out after much tinkering with the rear shock pressure and with the carbon wheels it's super responsive.
The only niggles I have at the moment are:
  1. XTR shifter is still borked but I have to get off my ass and do the warranty claim
  2. Cable rattle in the down tube
  3. Rubber bung thing on the down tube has disappeared

It's no XC whippet but I'm starting to really like it.

is that the gold mine half way up 4th Hill?
Sure is, I live at the bottom of the hill.

Got a 210mm One Up dropper for this last night from another forum member and I'll install that when my cable bung clampy thing turns up from Norco.
Since 'working from home' I'm doing a lot more riding and really starting to enjoy this bike and it's a keeper for sure but I don't think it can be my only bike. I'm not a Norco fan boy but the steel Torrent looks interesting.
Still a few niggles to iron out
  1. XTR shifter - actually getting better over time but I don't want to be without a bike so haven't done the warranty claim
  2. Hopes are getting sqeaky, find new pads
  3. Install new dropper and clean up cable routing
  4. Investigate cable tension on rear derailleur during suspension compression, somethings not right and suspension travel effects derailleur position

This has done a fair number of KM's and now that I've got another bike to ride in the interim I'll fix some of the issues.
It came with an E-Thirteen carbon crank and bottom bracket, but that's starting to sound like a cement mixer so it's going to come out and get replaced with something more reliable. I think Wheels Manufacturing make a BB with Enduro bearings, I just need to measure a few things.
It's got this in it at the moment and the bearings are some no name shit but they have a flanged edge so I've got fuck all chance of getting an SKF off the shelf. There is zero dirt/dust ingress protection except what's on the bearing itself so they have little chance of living a long life anyway but low quality bearings isn't helping things.

The other problem that I've not been able to fix is the constant squeak from the Hope brakes so I've ordered a Swiss Stop rotor/pad combo to see if that helps.
Also got a new C1 Debonair thingo for the Pikes so I'll do that and a lower leg service and maybe some paint protection because I've worn the paint off the rear triangle with heel rub.

I'm intruiged - What type of squeak? Is it just a initial pad contact squeak, or the long howling sound the whole time the brakes are applied (ie: SRAM brakes)? I'm assuming it only happens when brakes are applied? Hopes have been by far the quietest brakes I have run myself. I just use the genuine metallic pads.

I also run the Hope metal pads, it's not quite a wet Avid turkey warble but a persistent squeal under all conditions. More pressure, wet conditions, constant cleaning, dust, piston realignment, COVID-19 - nothing changes the squeak/squeal. I've had great success with the Swiss Stop products on XTR and Saint brakes so with any luck that will solve it. It seems to be a reasonably common complaint with the Hope brakes over on MTBR.

It's a weird thing - I never have any problems at You Yangs (granitic sand), but when I ride high-country (clay) I do get the same squeaky high pitched turkey warble building up as the day goes along. Get home after the trip, lightly touch up the pads with a bit of emery or a kitchen scourer or something and back to no problems for months of riding at Youies again. Honestly never been sure if it's the extra elevation/track length up high country or some kind of contamination from the clay dust/mud.
