A serious accusation for the Wiggle-CRC-Bike24 empire.
I should think that they wouldn't knowingly sell counterfeit products, apparently they could potentially have been sourced from a dodgy supplier/importer without them knowing.

There was more to it that I cannot recall or look back to (was an IG story), i'm just relaying the info & want to stress that i'm not pointing blame at the stores themselves.

Get on to them and make them aware you have a set of the painted ones and you believe after what you've read online that yours may be fakes.

I went and checked the 511 invoice and mine came from R2... not that it matters, the bike is long gone.

A Tassie mechanic/shop (Silks) has recently discovered that some EX511 rims he had ordered through Bike24 were fakes - not as tough and had a painted finish vs bead blasted+anodised. I had also ordered a 511 through Bike24 (or possibly HiBike, can't recall) that didn't last as long as expected, had a closer look today and yes, it is indeed painted.

If you have some DT rims ordered through EU stores, perhaps worth having a look.

Edit: I want to stress that i'm just relaying info so that people are aware - certainly not wanting to point blame.
Luckily I bought mine from Hibike!

Still going to go have a look at mine also.

I see why people don't online buy from normal bike shops instead of Amazon.
Ordered a chainring on Tuesday from Amazon, delivery coming today. Ordered a product from mtbdirect, still not posted.
Both ordered the same day, friggen sad really.
I know who I'll be ordering through in future.
Yeah first world problems but that's my whinge for the day

Yeah the domestic big names in online retail are actually quite shit house at what they apparently specialise in.

Definitely should have gone to specsavers
MTB Direct got bought out or significantly sold off to a private equity player didn't it? Explains the shit service if so, although their sales seem to be a lot better than before.

I think the equity firm purchased a sizable share of mtbdirect. But these problems existed long before that.

To be honest the only reason I went through them was because of the cheap box drivetrain. Could of come close to the price for SRAM on Amazon but wanted to try the box.
Lesson to self, Amazon is better than most.
Bought some brakes from Spain a while ago, took a week to arrive if I remember correctly

LOL :(

Mine from Hibike also fake judging by the scratch test. I compared it to a XM481 from @beeb and the XM481 coating doesn't scratch at all.

The 511?

Black scratches off with a brass o-ring pick
I compared to another 511 I have and same deal. Very obviously soft paint. Visually it looks identical to the real thing. No clues whatsoever that I can see. Even the little bag with nipples and washers and little DT booklet looks legit.
I don’t expect a lot but I sent an email off to Bike24.

Crikey, that's not good. Could likely be a widespread thing then.

So the other (legit?) 511 is anodized vs painted?

Have attached some pics of the rim I have.

Appears to be. The finish is much stronger. I could still scratch down to raw ali but had to really try.

I have a set of 511 ex-Deutschland, can’t check them for another week. But memory says they have the proper finish.

Should be in rim well and also have stickers each side of valve hole. All mine check out ok but years ago I thought I had a fake 481 but it was when they changed how they were finished
