Project is Yarra Ranges Council, with state gov funding, on a mix of state forest and national park. Not sure about the maintenance plans, I'd assume YRMTB club organising volunteers for working bees, maybe a couple of funded positions within the council for regular maintenance crew.
Council did employ some people for maintenance of trails, however a couple of people won’t put a dent in a 160km network, let alone the entire Yarra Ranges shire.

I can all but guarantee the YRMTB club won’t be given the authority or freedom to maintain the trails

Hopefully there is the funded positions from the council (it's also beneficial that they have some trail building skills too, not just from the council grounds crew) as the size of the proposed network would be hard to manage with volunteers alone.
From what I have found, most volunteers at working bees only have a two to three hours of their time to give, and with a really big network where it may take an hour to walk into the part you are working on, the access time eats up all your volunteers availability.
Best for volunteers to tackle all the easy access work and the paid staff do the more remote work.

Derby have two fulltime trail crew for about 120km of trail

Absolutely - didn't mean that to sound like I thought it was enough or a good/sustainable model, more that that seems to be the legacy format such as at Silvan/Youies etc (including all the obstacles and roadblocks to club maintenance as you say).

I'm not sure that they are even two full FTE's any more
Last I heard they did, but I do know when a trail gets a big makeover, like they have just recently done on Upper Flickerty Sticks and Atlas, they get World Trail in to do that work.
With the Wild Mersey trails they are planning to employ two of the local builders that are currently building the network once they are finished with the construction.

Using the "after a storm" theme, was it YRMTB club people or Parks who cleared the fallen trees at silvan?
No idea but i was chattign to a bloke on an ebike with a chainsaw on his backpack and he said he was paid for by delwp. This was at Lake Mountain. It's amazing what can get done when you commercialise shuttles and it's a politically influential place like marysville.

Lots of different people contributed to clearing the trails with many locals and YRMTB members on the tools.

The current trails most people ride are looked after by a select few but the OG Silvan/YRMTB fellas do a hell of a lot of work and those guys are not spring chickens either, they deserve a lot of credit for devoting their lives to it.

Fyi, there's a zoom meeting from the committee on right now if you're interested.

I got in late, but early enough to hear someone complaining that bower birds might be stealing blue ribbons...

There is a hearing happening right now. This from the EES report:

The IAC will hold a directions hearing to set
the terms and arrangements of the EES public inquiry hearing. This hearing will be held
online on Friday 11 February 2022 and is open to anyone to attend. You can log into the meeting via the link here:

Edit: Beaten by an hour by the much more switched on @Plankosaurus

I tuned in to hear requests to somehow overlay every possible GIS layer onto a single clear and easy to read map....

There's a reason why there's so many maps in the documents....

I think it will end up being less than 50% of what is planned and that will not be done for 5 years at least.

Would absolutely love to be proven wrong though!

The all (160km or whatever of trails) or nothing approach makes me lean more to the nothing side of things.

Don't think it's an all or nothing approach per se. YRC will be asking for all because they're not going to get more than they ask for. But off the back of the EES, the planning minister could partially approve the proposal (e.g. the trails that are on state land but not those in national park, or not those trails that are considered too close to sensitive ecosystems etc). @caad9 is probably on the money though the timeline might be shorter. If they get approval to build 50-60km of trail that'd still be great and shouldn't take 5y to deliver.

Thanks for your replies , when are they expected to make a decision, or is that still up in the air ?
Up in the air until the locals have finished moaning about mountain bikers killing wingless flys, buying all the milk, lighting fires, and beating their partners.

The process is underway. The nays are loud and very motivated, but also utterly outnumbered so we're still in this race.

Interesting Scenario , and you can understand the people involved handing out the final decision , feeling the pressure to not hand out one side a clear win and the other a clear loss and as result . a compromise of a go ahead with a reduction in size being the final verdict .

if I was a betting man , id probab;y lean towards that as well .

Still another week and a bit to go.

I feel sorry for the poor folks who have to give 5 mins to every person who submitted a request to speak.
At least most are via Zoom so you can tune out the NIMBYisms

Some of this stuff is flat out bonkers.

Lady yesterday was carrying on about packs of wild dogs in the area, because she saw a wee dog with no tail in the area and heard some barking one night.

Lady today was all riled up about how these extreme sports make us alpha male types aggressive and promotes domestic violence

And then there was old mate Fred who went on a full grandpa Simpson rant about global warming and how cutting down even a couple of trees will destroy the planet. I think. Mostly it was semi coherent rbling that seemed to change topic mid sentence. Super entertaining

Honestly, these people are clutching at straws. The MTB community is all positivity and showing what we're about, and the nimbys are all slander and demonizing.

Hopefully if a good percentage of the arguments against to a sane person are bordering on loony ,

that will go against them in the end
