Rented a Model 3, drove it to the coast. Fuck. Me. Amazing car. I am never going to buy another car from the dinosaurs who've purposely made shit electric cars the whole time Tesla was leaving them for dead.

Seriously, the base Model 3 is as quick as a Golf R (0-100 Is slightly slower on paper but the Tesla is gonna be way ahead off the mark so try and overtake me before we hit the speed limit kook) and around the same price. The choice is simple, if you are buying a petrol car that is as expensive as the equivalent Tesla, you're a fucking idiot.

That M3 vs Model 3 video where the guy, and a few of you decided the petrol was more "lively" (most of you having not actually driven either) just need to stop wanking on, petrol is fucking rubbish, period. It has nothing left to offer the world except Vaseline.

Must say I'm really happy with mine, quick, fun, cheap to run, no maintenance, not much to complain about.

I’ve quite deliberately not driven one because I can’t afford it yet…

Until it breaks down and you have to wait 6 weeks to get it serviced by Tesla. Or have a bingle and can't get it repaired because smash repairers won't touch it.

I think the cars are great but the closed garden servicing model can eat a dick.

At least the Porsche Taycan Cross, Polestar 2, and the Jag I-Pace have local parts and repair support.

A mate waited 8 weeks for a Jeep headlight after a bingle, so it’s not just Tesla which have long lead times to repair. If you are worried about long lead times after a bingle, get car hire included in your insurance.

Bought a model 3 last week, great car, much better than the ICE equivalents in the same price range.

But they hardly ever break down, less moving parts y'know. And no legacy bullshit, you really think Jaguar wants you to buy their electric car? They only made it because Tesla forced them to. I'm sure bingle repairers love Porsche Taycans as much.

Also, fuck all those cockbags for being late to the party with rubbish. And you won't punish them because you think it might take longer to fix? The Model 3 Standard Range is the best car I've ever driven. It's kind of lame to speculate that Tesla would take longer to fix than others, without any actual evidence. But go buy an iPace, I hope they aren't as shit as every Jag that ever existed.

Except all of the reports of Tesla's sitting around because they destroyed their SSDs with log files. Then having to wait weeks for Tesla to book you in to replace a $200 part.

If your outside a metro area you're doubly fucked. There's currently 3 Tesla body shops in Sydney. There are none outside of Sydney in NSW.

Then there's the build quality issues which are well known from the US and China factories.

The I-Pace is actually a Steyr built car (the same place that make g-wagons for mercedes) and has rated more highly then Tesla in the third party consumer reports in the US. I'm sure the Taycan and Polestar 2 will do better again.

At the end of the day it's a car. I'll buy my next car (probably a Taycan Cross or Defender 130 ev) based on it's qualities not some desire to punish some corporate entity that doesn't give a shit.

Sounds like they're built by landrover or jeep.

We test drove the model 3 a while ago in Canberra. Very public servant like, was cool that owners can opt in to have their car as a contactless test drive vehicle and get an incentive for it.
My partner loved it and so did I, was certainly worth a think, when the new one with improved ride height becomes available we will definately be jumping on the list if its around the model 3 price.
The best thing about buying a car of that price range and it being a Tesla is if you have a bingle then its almost always a write off if its a decent hit as there are parts shortages, only a few selected approved repairers, and usually around a 6 month wait for repairs to commence (in Sydney at the moment, a friend works at one of the approved panel workshops and they have too much work, has been great for his apprenticeship as he got the double, panel beating and Auto Elec)

Model Y is a compromised design with an annoying and impractical raised seating position. The SUV loving drones seem to like for whatever dumb arse reason though…

It does get a hatchback though - I’d love that on the Model 3.
It’s dearer than the Model 3 - it costs no more to make, but they can charge more because the idiots buy SUVs at any cost… More profits for model development, factory building and Space X though, so by all means overpay for a your jacked up Model 3 ;)

Its just the suspension I want, lift it a bit more, the 3 was pretty low and admittedly will scrape on the driveways of a lot of places we are looking at moving to ;), belly dragged a Honda HRV going to dogs herding school last week (tiny bit higher than a 3 once you factor in the plastic hanging bits), one small car family +motorbike so bikes etc on the roof, plus the usual Rally recon once society gets back to norm.
I think once Airflex, Airlift or the like comes out with a kit that will be the choice on a 3 just for ground clearance.

I might be wrong, but I don’t think the Model Y has any more ground clearance. It’s just a styling exercise, dash mounted higher, seats on spacers etc. Its all image.

Plenty of Model 3s have been modded with suspension lifts etc.

edit - it has about 2.5cms more clearance, but a slightly long wheelbase and is wider. Ie - nothing of consequence in it really…

This is insane! No wonder the insurance for Tesla's is stratospheric. The CO cost of writing off otherwise driveable cars is stupid as well.

Porsche has 3 approved smash repairers in Sydney and 1 in Canberra plus myriad independent repairers and restorers across the state. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has even more. And I imagine it would be the same situation for most of the European brands.

The big question mark in my mind is repairs. Porsche, JLR and BMW have a lot of independent workshops with ancillary support from wreckers, auto electricians etc. My independent Land Rover workshop doesn't currently do the hybrid models but he reckons that will change soon. I really like my workshop and they did a really good job and this will have a big impact on the next car I buy.

I reckon in the next 10 years there will be a wholesale change in the servicing industry. There's already a few workshops near me that specialise in EVs but that's likely to increase very quickly. And that will include battery refurbishment and recycling specialists.

In the US there are independent Tesla workshops now but they essentially operate in a grey zone without factory support. I'm not sure if that model will take off in a smaller market like Australia.

TLDR Tesla's are nice cars with inconsistent build quality, expensive insurance and a closed garden service and repair model.

The Dinosaurs are bringing out ev's. Some will be better, some will be worse than Tesla's cars. But they have the repair and support infrastructure in place to make living with their cars a lot easier.

Depends which model - S and X are all aloominum so not many body shops are keen on those. Same for an A8 or any other all aloominum body car.

Model 3 is steel and fairly conventional.
