Best idea ever haha.
So sick of changing wiper line.
Works really well, but occasionally when you've hit something hard the end links break.

But then you just get the ol' chain breaker tool out and shorten a link.

Being heavier than whipper line you can't run it as long (at least not with my second hand 2t ryobi), I've found 6 links totally is pretty optimal, once I bust another link I'll try 5

Did a self guided tour of the old Ammo factory along the Maribyrnong, spent a good 2.5hrs exploring in there with @Jpez until we came across a little security camera tower...we then had to gtfo before mr.security escorted us out.
Found all sorts of old stuff, rocket propulsion files, old beta cassettes, giant presses and furnaces.
Managed to get @Jpez to pose in a window too, he's a natural!

Neat idea. I have one of those 6 line trident heads that cuts pretty well but this has to be a step up.

Just watch those toes and ankles.
What could possibly go wrong?

Yeah, I was only going to use it wearing my zip-sided hightop work boots.

Even still I did bounce one of the chains off the steel cap. Minced the leather a bit, but the steel cap did its job

Glad you aren't one of the guys that are into wearing thongs while doing a bit of lawn maintenance.

I've accidentally whipped myself when the line has snagged up on something in the garden. It hurts like hell and sure goes an interesting shade of purple for a few days.

I don't want to think about a bike chain. A new way to say 'chain whip' :)

I hope you washed your hands after that little excursion!

I’ve heard a few tales about that place mostly concerning the amount of chemical contamination there. The best one concerned sticks of dynamite being found in a nearby stormwater drain!

Certainly there’s a good reason why such a big site on absolute prime real estate has managed to remain untouched by commercial developers for so long

While a different breed of contaminants, there has been a lot of heavy industry sites around here repurposed for residential. Sometimes the process takes years and years and years. I lived near a site known as "the gas works" for fairly obvious reasons a few years ago. I think the remediation in there (still ongoing) has been underway for about 5 years so far. Melbourne must still have a bounty of easier locations to develop?

Ouch, I can imagine the line would hurt like fk!

Yeah always safety boots and long pants when mowing or brushcutting/snipping.

Especially with the risk of chain whip

Yesssss Dad.... I did tell @Jpez not to fill his drink bottle from that funny looking puddle, but he couldn't help himself...
I dare say after more than 30years of the site not being used any chemicals have well and truly seeped into the ground and out into the adjacent river filling our fine Port Phillip Bay and all its inhabitants.
It did have a very Chernobyl-esk vibe about it at times, don't think we needed a Geiger Counter though..

What!!!! You told me that water WAS ok to drink!

The scale of the place is insane from the inside. We wouldn’t have covered half the ground we did if not on bikes. But yeah. It most certainly felt like a very poisoned and sketchy place to be. The remediation costs would be astronomical.
Someone told me later that the modern buildings surrounded by cameras were the old ASIS building and supposedly still have secure rooms in there hence probably why we saw security tearing off in that direction just as we we leaving.
A few more random pics if anyone intereste.

I have an FS130 for deforestation duties and it imparts so much energy into the cut bits and stones they bruise through jeans, chainsaw chaps work fine. We have an FS45 for around the house (130 has one of those 6 string heads and can ring bark a full grown tree in 3, 2, 1...) and it is ok in shorts. But the FS45s are known for eating carbies and while these are only $30 it is an ongoing thing. I lashed out and bought a cordless Milwaukee CLT-0 (!) while waiting on a new carbie. It is really good. Performance is a bit better than the 45 but not as light or well balanced, needs a strap which I will make up in due course. For cleaning around the tank and trees etc it is good. Gets about 45 mins on top speed per charge. No need to worry about fuel mixing etc. Been a success.

Hmmmm, reckon the FS45 has the same running gear as the FS55? Would make sense. I was looking at getting a real whipperer to replace the ageing Ryobi.

I had another great afternoon of riding, 3 days in a row!!! That's unheard of...back to work tomorrow though. Annoying bit of poodle trivia, I fell asleep in the garage. I got home from riding, put on a load of washing, was going to tune something on the bike and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz wake up an hour later still gross with the sweat dust butt naked and hungry. Guess I'll be making some dinner rather than going out.

Plus side laundry is ready to hang.
